Saints vs Texans odds maker breakdown: Offense The Saints’ attack is among the deadliest in preseason football, as its group of backups is capable. Second-string quarterback Mark Brunell was effective in leading New Orleans to a win in its opener while wideout Robert Meachem, a perennial preseason dynamo, torched the Bengals for a 64-yard score. Drew Brees looked sharp in limited duty and could have his way with the Texans’ “D” even if he plays one quarter. Matt Schaub was phenomenal during the few snaps he played, completing every pass attempt, but the Texans will obviously be careful with their brittle star quarterback. The Texans’ backup QB situation is gross and Dan Orlovsky did nothing to quiet betting sharps’ concerns, going 9 for 20 in the opener. However, with tall, powerful Chris Brown looking good in the preseason as the No. 2 runner, the Texans look superior on the ground, so we’ll call the offensive situation even. Betting Edge: Even
Saints vs Texans odds maker breakdown: Defense Houston did a so-so job getting to the quarterback against the Chiefs last week but did intercept a pass and hold K.C. to 192 passing yards. Meanwhile, the Saints are showing signs of improvement on “D.” They were ball hawks in their opener against Cincinnati, picking off a couple of passes and hurrying Carson Palmer like crazy. Jonathan Vilma is a man possessed this preseason and first-round pick Malcolm Jenkins could see his first action at corner this week, which would help New Orleans’ Saints vs Texans odds, as he’ll be playing to impress. Betting Edge: Saints
Saints vs Texans odds maker breakdown: Special Teams Saturday’s game should be close, so it could very well come down to the kicking at your sportsbook. John Carney is 45 years old and trying to get stretched out, while Kris Brown was perfect for the Texans last week and will be kicking at home. Houston has the edge here. Betting Edge: Texans
Saints vs Texans odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries The Saints’ pass rush may take a slight hit this week, as it looks like they’ll be without defensive end Charles Grant, who injured his hamstring against Cincinnati. They’ve also shut down Mark Simoneau for the season with a torn bicep muscle. The Texans will be without a key starter too; corner Jacques Reeves Is out with a broken leg, so the Saints’ receivers could abuse Houston’s backups. Betting Edge: Even
Saints vs Texans betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick It’s a tough choice, but I like the Saints on Saturday. Their defensive aggression looks promising and Houston wasn’t really pushed hard in its opener, so Saturday could be a wakeup call. New Orleans’ depth at quarterback and receiver should also create some mismatches and lead to big points. Bet on the Saints to win on the road. STAN’S PICK: Saints +3
