Vikings vs Saints betting odds – Favre will falter in Championship Game…again

Posted by Stan Simmons on 1/19/2010 4:00:47 PM

NFL Odds: Saints -4

The Vikings vs Saints betting odds presents and intriguing matchup of the two teams who were the best in the NFC all year long. The Saints are clearly the favorite but online betting cappers know that the Vikings are more than capable of winning this contest. But considering their road struggles, the injuries and the lack of production from Adrian Peterson, this is a tall task.

Sportsbook Odds: Saints -4, O/U: 52.5

What’s On The Line?
This one is for all the marbles…in the NFC. For Brett Favre, this is exactly what he came back for.

Favre’s last memory of a playoff game was throwing a game-ended interception to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship game two years ago so now he’s back to make amends and to hopefully put the Vikings over the top.

For New Orleans, they started the year 13-0 and while they wanted a perfect regular season, this was truly their goal. They’ll be fired up for this game and they also have a number of players who recall falling flat in the 2006 NFC Championship Game. They’ll be looking to wipe that memory with a win on Sunday.

Offensive Matchups: Vikings vs Saints betting odds
The Vikings passing game is hot right now as Favre-to-Sidney Rice is one of the best tandems in the NFL. Even so, NFL betting fans have to be wondering about Adrian Peterson. He doesn’t have a 100-yard rushing game in eight straight and his yards per carry is barely over 3.0. The Vikings probably won’t win without a huge effort from him.

While the Vikings offense isn’t getting the production it needs from one of its main parts, the Saints got a big boost from an unexpected source last week. For the first time in his career, running back Reggie Bush was running with purpose, lowering his pads and taking it to defenders. He finished the day with more than 200 total yards. Combined with the Saints lethal passing game, the Saints are very tough to stop – especially at home.

Defensive Matchups: Vikings vs Saints betting odds
The Vikings defense dominated the Dallas Cowboys last week but this week will be tough. Top cornerback Antoine Winfield is still nursing a foot injury and we’ve seen what happens to the Vikings against good passing offenses this year (see: Arizona Cardinals).  The Vikings need a huge game from Jared Allen and the defensive line to get into Drew Brees’ face. Otherwise, this will be a one-sided affair.

For the Saints, they will have a similar game plan to last week. The Vikings, like the Cardinals, are a pass-oriented squad with a veteran quarterback. If the Saints can get him off the spot and crumble the pocket, the Vikings are going to be in trouble. If they can’t do that, the Vikings should be able to make some big plays just like the Cardinals did when they have time. Slowing Peterson – even though he has struggled lately – is still a priority.

Notable Injuries: Vikings vs Saints betting odds
The Vikings still don’t have a healthy Antoine Winfield, which is a big problem. Winfield is the team’s top cornerback but a foot injury is keeping him to minimal nickel duties. Also, defensive end Ray Edwards injured his foot against the Cowboys and while the injury isn’t considered serious, it could limit him somewhat.

Over/Under Picks: Vikings vs Saints betting odds
This is a high total and for a second week in a row, it looks like one team may be doing the scoring. Unless the Vikings running game wakes up from its two month slumber, this could be a one-sided contest. The Saints defense plays very well at home, generally speaking.

Pick: Under 52.5

Outlook and Pick: Vikings vs Saints betting
The Vikings have Favre, but they don’t have the healthier roster, they don’t have home-field advantage and they don’t have their powerful running game. If that last point changes, they’ll be in this contest. Otherwise, they’ll be in trouble.

The Vikings defense is built to stop running teams and not passing teams. The Saints have too many weapons in the passing games for the Vikings to slow down. Look for them to be in control of this contest from start to finish.
