Patriots head 2009 Super Bowl betting odds

Super Bowl Betting Odds

  • New England remains the favorite
  • Chargers have as much talent as anyone
  • Colts and Jags offer great value

Finally, football season is here. Today we'll review the five teams with the best odds to win the Super Bowl, plus one sleeper pick with great value.

  1. New England Patriots, online sports betting odds: +350

The Pats almost made history last season but, as we all know, it ended at 18-1. Much of the core remains intact, especially on offense. Quarterback Tom Brady and receiver Randy Moss simply have too much juice for most teams to overcome.

Defensively, the secondary could be a serious weakspot after Asante Samuel bolted in free agency. That said, this team has an absurd amount of fire power. If they need to win in shoot outs, they will.

  2. Dallas Cowboys, NFL betting lines: +350

Will Tony Romo ever win a playoff game? The quarterback got more attention in the press for his relationship with Jessica Simpson than his playoff failures this offseason, but that will change come kick off. Romo is still surrounded by tons of talent, so they'll put up a lot of points.

The other side of the ball should be much-improved this season with the addition of corner Adam “Pacman” Jones. Jones is an incredible talent when he's on the field, and he was just reinstated by Commissioner Roger Goodell. You have to figure he'll behave himself for at least one season.

  3. San Diego Chargers, Super Bowl betting odds: +530

San Diego gave the Patriots everything they could handle in the playoffs last season, and that was with quarterback Phil Rivers playing on a gimpy leg and LaDainian Tomlinson out of action. This squad is regularly regarded as one of the most - if not the most - talented teams in the NFL.

The Chargers are balanced on both sides of the ball. Consistency has been the biggest obstacle in the team's past over the last few years. When they're playing at peak level they're as good as anyone in the league, including New England. But it's tough to figure out which team will show up and when.

  4. Indianapolis Colts, Super Bowl betting odds: +850

There was no “Super Bowl hang over” for the Colts; they went 13-3 before losing in the divisional playoffs to San Diego. The biggest story this offseason has revolved around Peyton Manning's knee. It sounds like he'll be ready to play in the season opener, and don't worry about rust?Manning is the most prepared quarterback in football.

Surprisingly, Indianapolis led the NFL in fewest points allowed last season. While a repeat performance likely isn't in the cards, Indy seems to have figured out the fast-and-small defense. It should be another solid unit this season.

  5. Jacksonville Jaguars, Super Bowl betting odds: +1200

Pretty good value at +1200 for Jacksonville. The Jaguars have a mean-and-punishing defense that should be even better with rookie defensive ends Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves joining the mix. They also have a great core of players on offense in quarterback David Garrard and running backs Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor.

The Jaguars will play classic, smash-mouth defense: pound the football on the ground and knock teams around on “D”. The biggest problem? They're the consensus 2008 NFL Super Bowl “chic pick”. Just about everyone loves them as an emerging contender. Those teams often don't work out.

  6. Blake's analysis: Considering their talent pools and odds, both Indy and Jacksonville offer great value if that's what you're looking for. If you're not concerned with odds and simply want the true favorite, the bookmakers have got it right here - the Patriots should be excellent again.

Blake walked onto his college football team and had a brief stint as an assistant coach after he graduated. He brings a sharp mind to the world of sports handicapping. Blake understands the nuances of the game that only someone who has played would understand, and he was one of the few who gave the Giants a chance against the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
