Super Bowl futures: Seahawks lead the way in NFC West
Sportsbooks have released their 2008 Super Bowl futures as as Week 1 of the NFL regular season is quickly approaching. Making solid football picks and achieving sports betting success is partly contingent on knowing all the key offseason changes, so Bettor's Edge is completing division-by-division recaps of the draft and free agency. Today, we'll review the NFC West.
The Arizona Cardinals (+3000 Super Bowl XLIII odds) suffered a significant loss when defensive end Calvin Pace fled in free agency to the New York Jets. The defense wasn't very good to begin with, but Pace was the juice that made it run and he will be missed. Arizona added cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and end Calais Campbell in the draft, but still expect to take the over in plenty of Cardinals games this season.
As has been the trend the past few years, San Francisco (+5000 Super Bowl XLIII odds) was active in free agency. The 49ers gave big money to Bengals defensive end Justin Smith, despite him picking up just two sacks last year. The team also spent draft picks on defense, picking up tackle Kentwan Balmer and corner Reggie Smith. Offensively, the team lost guard Justin Smiley, and the Niners will gamble that former Ram Isaac Bruce can stay healthy and improve the receiving corps.
The Seattle Seahawks (+3000 Super Bowl XLIII odds) are favorites to win the division (-120 NFC East winners odds), but they lost several key contributors, including wide out D.J. Hackett, defensive tackle Chuck Darby and kicker Josh Brown. The running game, which burned many bettors last season, will take a by-committee approach in '08. Last year's runners, Shaun Alexander and Maurice Morris, will be joined by free agent signings Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett. Besides second-round tight end John Carlson, Seattle focused on defense early in the draft, spending picks on defensive linemen Lawrence Jackson and Red Bryant.
The Rams (+16000 Super Bowl XLIII odds) didn't make any significant additions in free agency, other than signing Seattle kicker Josh Brown. St. Louis did, however, add a nice piece to the puzzle with second-overall pick Chris Long. He should eventually be a force on the defensive line. The team had eight picks this season, but only Long is expected to contribute immediately. St. Louis lost veteran receiver Isaac Bruce and underrated linebacker Brandon Chillar. Though neither are superstars, both were valuable pieces. Expect the team to be an underdog all season.
