Super Bowl futures: Will Vikings or Packers earn NFC North crown?
2008 Super Bowl futures have been released and its time to starting thinking about football picks for Week 1 of the NFL regular season. Bettor's Edge is providing division-by-division recaps of the draft and free agency to give sports bettor's a head start on the season. Today, we'll review the NFC North.
After a disappointing season in 2007, the Chicago Bears (+3500 Super Bowl odds) have made few changes to improve the situation. Most notably, the quarterback position remains in limbo. The team did try to address its offensive concerns, using its first three draft picks on a lineman, running back and receiver (Chris Williams, Matt Forte and Earl Bennett, respectively). Forte is important in particular, as last year's starter Cedric Benson was released after a spate of offseason problems. Expect the Bears to be underdogs all season long.
The Detroit Lions (+5000 Super Bowl odds) were awful on defense last year, so the team tried addressing much of the problem in the offseason. Football picks Jordon Dizon, Andre Fluellen and Cliff Avril were added in the second and third round; they'll add depth at linebacker and defensive line. Free agents Dwight Smith and Brian Kelly were brought in to help the secondary, and it's a good bet those smart veterans will upgrade it at least to some degree. On the other side of the ball, the Lions brought in more youth, drafting lineman Gosder Cherilus and running back Kevin Smith.
There wasn't much player movement during the offseason for Green Bay (+3500 Super Bowl odds), but there was one significant change: Brett Favre is gone. The long-time Packers quarterback retired, turning over the reins to Aaron Rodgers. They also drafted quarterback Brian Brohm with a second-round pick, but he likely won't contribute this year. Reciever Jordy Nelson and corner Patrick Lee also came on board in the second round but, for the most part, this young team will rely on its players to improve rather than adding new parts.
Many sports handicappers are picking the Minnesota Vikings (+2000 Super Bowl odds) as favorites to take over the division this season. The biggest addition is Jared Allen. The defensive end was acquired from Kansas City for draft picks and will make an already potent defense even more formidable. On offense, receiver Bernard Berrian will try to help quarterback Tarvaris Jackson make big strides in his development. Like Green Bay, Minny will rely on what's already in the cupboard.
