The Buick Open odds don’t quite qualify for the PGA’s Silly Season – that doesn’t start until after the PGA Championship – but this week’s host course, Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club, ranks as one of the easiest on Tour. In 2008, it had the second-lowest scoring average of any track. That means the scores should be low as can be and Tiger Woods could lap the surprisingly weak field this week in golf betting.
Buick Open odds: Tiger faces his weakest field in years
- WHAT: The 2009 Buick Open
- WHEN: Thursday, July 30 to Sunday, August 2
- WHERE: Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc, MI
- KEY STAT: Tiger Woods won the Buick Open in 2002, 2006
- THE PICK: Tiger Woods +165
If Tiger Woods (+165) can’t win or at least contend down to the wire this week, we’ll know something’s seriously wrong with him, as he couldn’t be set up any better to dominate the Buick Open odds. We already know he can succeed at Warwick Hills, as he leads the Tour in scoring average and he’s a two-time champ in this event. Secondly, the Buick Open odds always favor long hitters, as Vijay Singh joins Tiger as a multiple winner. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I can’t remember Tiger facing a field this weak in the last five years, if not ever. Including Tiger, just two of the top 30-ranked golfers in the world are playing this event. I can’t recommend betting on Tiger enough.
Tiger’s greatest (only?) threat this week is, of course, Jim Furyk (+1215). Furyk won the 2003 Buick Open odds and has eight top-10s in 14 starts there. He’s also shown before that he can hang with Tiger head-to-head. Furyk may be as much of a lock to finish second as Tiger is to finish first.
Justin Leonard (+2250) warrants consideration since he’s a former champ too (1996) and because he offers better value than the big faves. He also has five top-10s this season and played well at the British Open, so he’s a good mid-range play at your offshore sportsbook.
Nick Watney (+3550) and Brian Gay (+3050) will almost certainly fly under the radar this week, but their games are tailored to fit Warwick Hills. Watney’s fifth on Tour in driving distance and has three top-four finishes this season, including the Buick Invitational (a different tournament). Brian Gay ranks fifth on Tour in scoring average, third in scrambling and fourth in putts per round, so he could post some low scores this week. Either of these guys warrants a long-shot pick if that’s how you like to bet on Buick Open odds.
MARCO’S PICK: While the Buick Open has some decent sleepers, this is simply not the week to “be trendy” and bet against Tiger. Everything about the Buick Open screams landslide win. Bet on Tiger Woods.

Marco Sussman isn't too bad on the links, reportedly a five handicap. But, he's great in the sports betting game. He'll watch just about anything you put in front of him, but golf is what really gets his juices flowing. Thoughts or questions? Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
