Byron Nelson Odds – Poulter will let his game speak for him in Dallas
When looking over the sports betting lines for this week’s HP Byron Nelson Championship at the Four Seasons Resort and Club beginning on Thursday, players will find a familiar name at the top of the list for a tournament that is named after the late, great golfer who was born close to Dallas.
Adam Scott is the defending champion in this event, but this week’s winner will be another foreign player who is more known for his fashion and his outspoken ways.
Byron Nelson Odds: Poulter will finally come through
- WHAT: The HP Byron Nelson Championship
- WHERE: The Four Seasons Resort and Club in Dallas, TX
- WHEN: Thursday, May 21 to Sunday, May 24
- KEY STATS: Adam Scott is the defending champ
- PICK: Ian Poulter
Phil Mickelson is the favorite at +700 and he won here back in 1996. Mickelson has reeled off five top-10s in his last seven starts, although his last outing was a 55th-place finish at the Players Championship.
Next is Ian Poulter, who has Byron Nelson odds of +2000 in your online sports book this week, and the loud Englishman has had a very good season to date with six top-20s in seven starts, including two straight top-5s. His best finish in this tournament was a third-place result in 2007 and, with the run he is on right now, he’s very close to winning an event on this side of the pond.
David Toms is quietly getting his game back in shape with two top-10s in his last three starts, including a ninth-place finish at the Players Championship, and he leads a group of golfers with Byron Nelson odds of +2500. The veteran hasn’t played in this tournament since 2004, when he missed the cut, but the previous year he finished a very respectable sixth.
Anthony Kim badly needs a spark for his season, as he hasn’t cracked the top 10 since a runner-up finish in the first tournament of the season. Last week’s 71st-place finish at the Valero Texas Open is his worst result of the year in a tournament in which he played on the weekend, so if you’re betting sports, you may want to stay from Kim, even with golf betting odds of +3300.
A solid darkhorse pick is Scott Verplank, who is listed at +4000. Verplank won this tournament in 2007, and he has eight top-25s in 22 starts in a tournament which is dear to his heart, as Verplank is a Dallas native and Nelson was a very good friend to the veteran golfer when he was growing up. Emotions can carry a golfer a long way, and Verplank calls this event his “fifth major”.
Although he is more known for saying he could compete with Tiger Woods, along with a colorful wardrobe (that would be an understatement), the game of this week’s winner will speak volumes about him. Ian Poulter has yet to win on American soil, and outside of a missed-cut at Bay Hill, he’s been in contention in every tournament he’s been in this year. He leads the Tour in scrambling, which is a great stat because that means he doesn’t give away a lot of strokes by bogeying holes.
MARCO’S PICK: It’s time Poulter starts producing results to go with his lofty expectations, and he looks ready to finally claim a win. Bet on Ian Poulter with your golf betting pick this week.

Marco Sussman isn't too bad on the links, reportedly a five handicap. But, he's great in the sports betting game. He'll watch just about anything you put in front of him, but golf is what really gets his juices flowing. Thoughts or questions? Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
