Mercedes-Benz Championship: Vijay Singh leads favorites in first tourney of the year
- WHAT: Mercedes-Benz Championship
- WHEN: January 8-11, 2009
- WHERE: Kapalua Resort Plantation Course in Lahaina, HI
- KEY STATS: Daniel Chopra is the defending champion, winning in ’08 with a -18 score
- PICK: Anthony Kim
If you bet sports, the 2009 golf betting season is about to get underway at the Mercedes-Benz Championship at the hilly Kapalua Resort Plantation Course in Lahaina, Hawaii. Daniel Chopra picked up the second win of his PGA career at this event last year, but golf odds show he’ll have to deal with a couple of fellow past winners, including one who holds the course record at Kapalua, as well as two of the PGA Tour’s young guns.
Vijay Singh is the Mercedes-Benz Championship favorite in this event, and last year’s FedEx Cup winner won here in 2007. However, it’s been announced that Singh will miss five weeks following this event as he needs knee surgery. It will be interesting to see how the 45-year-old handles walking this course, known as one of the hilliest on the Tour. Singh won three times last year, all in the final third of the season, and he finished 12th here in 2008.
Ernie Els comes in at +800 on Mercedes-Benz Championship betting odds. this weekend, and “The Big Easy” shot a blistering course-record -31 to win here in 2003. Els is coming off an inconsistent 2008, winning once in February, and he finished in the Top-6 in two of his final three events, showing he might be close to the form which made him one of the top challengers to Tiger Woods.
Anthony Kim, just 23 years old, joins Els with golf betting odds of +800, while 27-year-old Camilo Villegas comes in at +1100. Kim had a memorable 2008, playing a massive role on the winning United States team in the Ryder Cup, while capturing the first two wins of his young career.
Heading into his third year on the Tour, Kim has high expectations for himself. Villegas also earned his first pair of wins, claiming the final two FedEx Cup events of the year. The Colombian is more than ready to turn his massive potential into PGA glory. Golf betting fans can expect good things from this duo over the next few years.
MARCO’S PICK: The defending champion, Chopra, enters with Mercedes-Benz Championship odds of +4000, but he was also a longshot last year, which is the beauty of golf; anyone can win in any given tournament. However, I’m sensing a huge year for Kim, who has harnessed his confidence. He has more than enough talent to challenge the world’s top golfers as he showed in the Ryder Cup. Bet online with Anthony Kim to make a statement and come out with a victory this week in Hawaii.

Marco Sussman isn't too bad on the links, reportedly a five handicap. But, he's great in the sports betting game. He'll watch just about anything you put in front of him, but golf is what really gets his juices flowing. Thoughts or questions?
