Just a quick peek at the names among the sports betting lines for the Quail Hollow Championship this weekend can make any PGA betting fan’s jaw drop; the tourney, formerly known as the Wachovia Championship, boasts one of the best fields for any non-major tournament.
It comes as no surprise that Tiger Woods is the sports betting online favorite this week; though he didn’t win the Masters he certainly looked great and the concept of finishing outside the top 10 is pretty much foreign right now for him. He is still having the odd blip with the putter this season, though, so he may not quite be ready to go on his inevitable run of victories.
Phil Mickelson has been inconsistent this season. Normally, a strong short game rescues him from the trouble that accompanies his aggressive style, but his scrambling stats are poor in 2009 PGA betting. He’s not as safe a play as you’d think considering his +900 sportsbook line.
It’s hard to go against Geoff Ogilvy (+1800) this season; he’s racking up wins and top-five finishes. However, Quail Hollow hasn’t been historically good to him despite his strong putting skills, so you may be better off perusing the Quail Hollow lines for someone with a better track record there.
Why not go with some former winners? Anthony Kim (+2800) is the defending champ and, though 2009 golf betting has been disappointing for him so far, playing at a course that has been kind to him before may be his ticket out of his slump. Jim Furyk shares the +2800 value. A winner in 2006, Furyk’s success has been spotty this season, with strong showings and missed cuts sprinkled together, but his short game has been excellent and sets him up well for success this weekend. 2003 winner David Toms makes for a great sleeper play at +5000; he doesn’t always fare well at Quail Hollow but his driving accuracy and putts per greens in regulation are among the best in PGA odds this year, so he could warrant a pick.
Rory Sabbatini and Charles Howell III are also decent picks this week, no so much based on success at Quail Hollow but based on strong play in 2009 golf betting overall. Don’t get sucked in by Sergio Garcia (+3300) or Vijay Singh; both look like shadows of their former selves this season and, while they can certainly turn things around, nothing about their recent results suggests that will happen any time soon.
MARCO’S PICK: Tiger will certainly be in the hunt, but I’d bet on Jim Furyk, a man who isn’t afraid of Tiger, to take this event. He’s not quite past his prime yet and he’s due for a win, so it makes sense for him to get the monkey off his back at Quail Hollow, where he’s a proven stud.

Marco Sussman isn't too bad on the links, reportedly a five handicap. But, he's great in the sports betting game. He'll watch just about anything you put in front of him, but golf is what really gets his juices flowing. Thoughts or questions? Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
