Sony Open Golf Odds – Toms’ iron play serves him well at Waialae

Sony Open Odds

Steve Stricker +1200
Zach Johnson +1500
Robert Allenby +2500
Rory Sabattini +2500
Ernie Els +2500
David Toms +3300
Luke Donald +5000

Online betting players teed off for the first time last week at the SBS Championship, and the PGA Tour will stay in Hawaii for the Sony Open this week. This isn’t a course for the big drivers, which means accuracy, putting and experience will get you the win, which is why we’re putting our money on David Toms.

Sony Open Odds: Accurate Toms finally wins again

  • WHAT: Golf betting
  • WHEN: Thursday, January 14 to Sunday, January 17
  • WHERE: Waialae Country Club, Honolulu, HI
  • KEY STAT: No one under 30 has won the Sony Open since 1997

Steve Stricker is the Sportsbook favorite at +1200, and he has a good track record at Waialae with two T-4s and a T-23 in his last three trips here. The world’s No.3 player was T-10 in the SBS Championship, hitting 81.9% of greens-in-regulation, and this will serve him well on a course that rewards ball strikers.

Speaking of ball strikers, defending champion Zach Johnson is next at +1500 and he rode his iron play to last year’s two-stroke victory over Adam Scott. Last week, Johnson hit 87.5% of his GIRs, and he finished the SBS Championship on a high, shooting a 68 on Sunday to end up in 18th place.

There is a talented group of golfers with golf betting odds of +2500, led by Robert Allenby, who won a couple of international tournaments after the PGA season had ended and should have some confidence. Also, watch out for Rory Sabattini, who shot a blistering 63 on Sunday at the SBS Championship to finish second to Geoff Ogilvy. His last four trips to Waialae have yielded two runner-up finishes and a T-12 from last season.

David Toms’ last PGA win came here in 2006, and he finished second to Johnson last season, so his golf betting odds of +3300 could offer some good value. This is a course that isn’t long and you need to be accurate, and that is Toms to a tee: he was the fourth-best driver on the Tour last season and his iron play is well known around the PGA.

If you’re looking for a golf betting darkhorse, check out Luke Donald at +5000. The Englishman looks to be recovered from a wrist injury that bothered him most of last season, and he has five top-25s in six trips to Waialae. Donald started to play better later in 2009, and he’ll be eager to start his 2010 campaign off on a good foot.

Marco’s Pick: Waialae, like last week’s SBS Championship at Kapalua, can be a handful when the wind kicks up, but it’s not nearly as hilly as its cousin. Still, iron play will be at a premium for the winner, and that is why Toms should return to the winner’s circle this week in his 2010 debut. Toms is too talented to have gone four years without a win, and it looks like he’s healthy again after back problems have plagued him over the past couple of years. Bet on David Toms to get his second win at Waialae.
