US Open Odds - Tiger still man to beat at Bethpage Black

Posted by Marco Sussman on 8/25/2009 7:09:36 AM
US Open oddsThose checking out this year’s sports betting odds for the US Open will hope that this year’s event has the same excitement as 2008, when Tiger Woods held off Rocco Mediate in a Monday playoff on essentially one leg at Torrey Pines. The 109th U.S. Open will be played on the Black course of Bethpage State Park, and the last time it was here in 2002, guess who the winner was? This year’s sports book favorite, that’s who.

US Open odds: Tiger Woods to be king of the course once again

  • Tiger goes for fourth U.S. Open crown
  • Mickelson still up in the air
  • Garcia could surprise

Woods missed the rest of last season with the infamous knee injury (and a double leg break), but before putting in one of the greatest performances in any sport to win his third U.S. Open. Woods will be the prohibitive favorite in this event according to US Open odds, and the last time he was at Bethpage Black, he beat Phil Mickelson by three strokes in 2002. Take away ‘06’s missed cut at Winged Foot following the death of his father, Tiger had five top-two finishes in the U.S. Open since 2000.

Mickelson also has a good track record in the second major of the year, with seven top-10s in 15 starts. However, Mickelson’s availability is still not known as he left the PGA Tour indefinitely after his wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer. “Lefty” had been playing well before this tragedy, and the layoff could affect his game.

Woods took the Open back to the U.S. after four straight foreign players (Retief Goosen, Michael Campbell, Geoff Ogilvy and Angel Cabrera) had won, and a player to watch in online sports betting this year will be the feisty Spaniard, Sergio Garcia, who finished T-18 at Torrey Pines last year. Garcia finished 22nd at the Players Championship in his last tournament on American soil, and he was T-4 at Bethpage Black back in 2002 behind Woods and Mickelson.

Another player who did well in that tournament? Padraig Harrington, who finished T-8. Of course, the Irishman has gone on to win three majors since then with back-to-back wins in the British Open, as well as last year’s PGA Championship. The U.S. Open is the only major that Harrington didn’t come away with a top-five result last year, but he has four top-10s in 10 starts, so golf betting players need to keep an eye out for Harrington when going over their US Open odds.

Marco Sussman isn't too bad on the links, reportedly a five handicap. But, he's great in the sports betting game. He'll watch just about anything you put in front of him, but golf is what really gets his juices flowing. Thoughts or questions? Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
