Wyndham Championship odds admittedly don’t have the same ring to them in golf betting as “PGA Championship odds,” but there’s still plenty to play for in North Carolina this week. The Wyndham Championship is the last tournament before the FedEx cup “playoffs,” so a few scrappy golfers are making their final pushes for the big dance.
Wyndham Championship odds: Watson and the field will score low this week
- WHAT: The 2009 Wyndham Championship
- WHEN: Thursday, August 20 to Sunday, August 23
- WHERE: Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC
- KEY STAT: Winning score has been 18-under or better in five of last six years
- THE PICK: Bubba Watson +6600
In an obscure tournament like this one, everyone’s Wyndham Championship odds look like “sleeper” plays, but some guys actually have better chances than others. Lucas Glover (+1600) is the most popular sports betting pick this week. He’s cracked the top 25 in half his starts this season and turned heads with his U.S. Open win and fifth-place finish at the PGA. Surely he can handle Sedgefield Country Club by comparison. Then again, he gave away a lot of shots last week with random brain cramps on seemingly simple shots. Next up is Tim Clark, also listed at +1600 in Wyndham Championship odds. He has two sixth-place finishes in three starts at Greensboro and is ranked in the top five in scoring average this season, which bodes well at him at a tourney that demands low scores. He’s an excellent choice this week. K.J. Choi is an interesting pick at +2800 value. He won this event in 2005 and is playing well lately, with four top-10s in six starts. However, it’s important to know that the Wyndham wasn’t played at Sedgefield when Choi won, so it’s tough to put stock into his past success. Offshore sportsbook sleeper time. The first name to think about is Bubba Watson at +6600. The Wyndham calls for low scoring, and Watson has the tools to do so. He’s the second-longest hitting player on Tour and he’s made birdie or better in 20 per cent of his holes this season. Could he earn his second career victory this week? The deepest of the deep sleepers? Fred Couples (+8000). Statistically, he’s set up to win as well as anyone. He hasn’t played a ton in 2009, but he’s been effective when he has, posting three top-10s and cracking the top 20 in driving distance, proximity to hole, birdie conversion percentage and par breakers. Considering those important stats, his value is pretty fantastic. MARCO’S PICK: To me, the pick comes down to Clark, Watson and Couples. First, let’s cross off Clark. He’s a good player but he still hasn’t won on Tour and he crumbled the last time he had a win in his hands. Couples is a good pick but the age factor may hold him back. That leaves Watson. He’s inconsistent, but he balances all the “off” weeks with “on” weeks, and this should be one of those weeks. Bet on Bubba Watson to win the Wyndham and give you a great return on your golf betting investment. Marco Sussman isn't too bad on the links, reportedly a five handicap. But, he's great in the sports betting game. He'll watch just about anything you put in front of him, but golf is what really gets his juices flowing. Thoughts or questions? Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
