Capitals vs Flyers odds - Ovie, Washington sinking fast
Capitals vs Flyers odds will offer plenty of excitement for NHL betting fans on Thursday, as Alexander Ovechkin will put his dynamic skill set on display. Not all is right in Washington, though, as the Caps are in a serious skid after failing to make a move at the trade deadline. That could spell trouble against Philly and it’s collection of young, scrappy forwards in this potential playoff matchup.
Capitals vs Flyers odds – Thursday at 7:00 p.m. ET
- Capitals a loser at NHL trade deadline
- Washington dealing with scoring woes
- Philly’s lineup deep and talented
If anyone emerged as a “loser” from the NHL trade deadline, it was Washington. The Capitals have the Southeast Division locked up, meaning a third-place seed in the Eastern Conference, but their Stanley Cup odds aren’t exactly burning bright. Washington badly needed to acquire a goaltender and failed to do so, and a deep playoff run with Jose Theodore between the pipes is incredibly unlikely.
To make matters worse, the Caps have struggled mightily in March, losing four straight before finally knocking off Nashville with a 2-1 overtime win on Tuesday. Ironically, goal scoring was the problem, as Washington has scored just 10 times in its past five games. Mike Green has gone cold, and Washington could use a little more production out of him. The defenseman had an incredible run in January and February, scoring points in 13 of 14 games, but he’s been ice-cold in March, recording just two assists in five games.
The Flyers have gone 6-3-1 in their past 10 games, including two straight wins. Right now Philly holds fourth place in the Eastern Conference, but Montreal and Pittsburgh are chasing closely behind, so points are very valuable at this point. Philadelphia is another team that probably could have used a goalie at the deadline, as it will enter the postseason with Martin Biron and Antero Niittymaki turning away pucks. The duo has been solid if unspectacular this season.
Philadelphia employs a deep group of scrappy, talented forwards that will make it tough on Washington to slow down. Six forwards should surpass the 50-point mark, including Mike Richards (pacing for 33 goals and 86 points) and Jeff Carter (who is presently third in the NHL with 38 goals).
That’s bad news for the struggling Capitals; especially considering Philly plays excellent at home (20-9-4) and that the Flyers lead the season series 2-1. The last thing the Caps need right now is a road game against a tough opponent—bet on the Flyers.
