Devils vs Hurricanes odds are favoring New Jersey, a team with a wealth of playoff experience and a future Hall-of-Fame goaltender. However, the Hurricanes are peaking at the right time and head into the playoffs with a lot of momentum. Momentum plays a huge part this time of year—can Carolina pull off an upset on sports betting lines?
Devils vs Hurricanes odds: Carolina primed to pull off the upset
- WHO: Devils vs Hurricanes
- WHAT: Best-of-seven series
- WHEN: Game 1 is Wednesday, April 15, 7:30 PM ET
- WHERE: Prudential Center in New Jersey
- KEY STATS: Carolina won three of four against Devils this year
- PICK: Carolina in seven
The Hurricanes won seven of their last 10 entering the playoffs, and Eric Staal has been at the center of Carolina’s strong play. Staal, who had 40 goals this year, notched 36 points over the last month of the season, and he was also solid all season on the defensive end of the ice, posting a team-high +15. Ray Whitney, 36, led the team in points with 77.
In goal, Cam Ward had a career-high 39 wins and .916 save percentage, as well as a career-low 2.44 GAA. Ward played in 28 straight games before taking a rest in the season finale, but he’s young, so he shouldn’t be burnt out.
The Devils lost six straight before winning four of their last five to end the season, and Martin Brodeur should be fresh for the playoffs after missing four months with a biceps tear. Brodeur did look a little rusty down the stretch and he’ll need to be at his best, because the Devils are far from an offensive juggernaut.
Zach Parise was third in the league with 45 goals, but Patrik Elias is limping into the postseason with a groin ailment. Brian Gionta and Jamie Langenbrunner don’t evoke fear into the hearts of many defenses, and the Devils are also surprisingly poor penalty killers, finishing 21st in the NHL.
Stanley Cup odds are backing New Jersey, but the Devils dropped three of four to the Hurricanes this season. The Devils managed to avoid the season sweep with a win in the season finale, but Ward was sitting and he was brilliant against the Devils by winning all three of his games with a 1.67 GAA.
DON’S PICK: Unless the Devils find goals from someone other than Parise, it’s looking to be a second straight first-round exit for New Jersey. Bet on Carolina in an NHL betting upset in this series.
