New York Islanders Odds - Islanders still a tenant in NHL basement

Posted by Don Melrose on 9/23/2009 11:39:00 AM
betting on hockeyThe New York Islanders odds to win the Stanley Cup are the longest in the league. While they won’t be as bad as they were last year when they lost 500 man games due to injury, online betting cappers know they still don’t have enough talent to really improve.

New York Islanders Odds: +15000 to win Stanley Cup

  • Islanders need their young core of players to develop
  • Tavares must become the face of the franchise
  • Isles have more depth in net this year

New York Islanders odds maker breakdown: OFFENSE
The Islanders did get the prize of the NHL entry draft, John Tavares, but they didn’t get much else. Tavares must become the face of the franchise and a leader on the ice, but that’s a lot to ask of a 19-year-old rookie. He isn’t going to have much help either - the forward contingent includes Doug Weight, Trent Hunter, Blake Comean, Kyle Okposo and 2008 first-round pick Josh Bailey. There are prospects here but no one reliable yet. This team will have trouble scoring all year long.

New York Islanders odds maker breakdown: DEFENSE
The Isles aren’t much stronger on the blue line as they are several bricks short of a load. While the forwards have a good core of prospects with high ceilings, the blue line is just a mediocre group of guys. Mark Streit and Brendan Witt are reliable veterans, Bruno Gervais and Andy Sutton are OK, and that’s about it. NHL betting fans should note that there isn’t much depth here either.

New York Islanders odds maker breakdown: GOALTENDING
Rick DiPietro still isn’t fully healthy, so Isles general manager Garth Snow brought in two goalies: Dwayne Roloson and Martin Biron. Both should upgrade the backup spots and maybe even the primary spot. DiPietro hasn’t exactly been pushed for the starting job, but with some competent backups, he’ll have to play well (if at all) or he’ll continue to be on the bench. Overall, this is an area where the Islanders have improved.

New York Islanders odds maker breakdown: SPECIAL TEAMS
The Islanders special teams will depend on their forwards. As of now, they could potentially have the core of youngsters that will be their foundation of the future. But as we all know, prospects in the NHL don’t always develop as planned, which means that the Islanders may not have much more than Tavares. As go their prospect, so will their special teams.

New York Islanders odds maker breakdown: SEASON OUTLOOK
Sportsbook odds makers have the Islanders as the longest shot to win the Cup and there are plenty of reasons for it. The Isles’ forward contingent is unproven, their defense is unglamorous, and goaltending is unspectacular. If all of their youngsters play to their potential, this could be a surprise team, but even then a playoff appearance is a stretch.
