Penguins vs Bruins Odds - Exhausted Pens will find a way to win

Posted by Don Melrose on 11/10/2009 10:47:06 AM
NHL bettingThe Penguins vs Bruins odds could represent an opportunity for the reeling Bruins. It’s been a disappointing start for Boston, whom many sportsbook bettors picked to win the Stanley Cup. However, a win over Pittsburgh would go a long way and the Pens could be ripe for the picking as they close out a road trip.

Penguins vs Bruins odds: Time for Crosby to shoulder the load

  • Malkin, Gonchar, Letang out for Pittsburgh
  • Bruins playing good “D” but struggling to score without Savard and Lucic
  • Crosby pointless in last four games

Tonight, 7:00 p.m. ET
Penguins vs Bruins odds: Penguins +110, Bruins -130
Pittsburgh: 12-5-0 (1st Atlantic)
Boston: 7-7-2 (3rd Northeast)

Online betting fans have definitely been disappointed in the Bruins this year; last week’s three-game losing streak was especially tough. However, the news isn’t all bad. They’ve quietly rediscovered last year’s stingy defensive form, allowing two goals or fewer in six straight games. They also finally woke up offensively last Saturday against Buffalo, scoring four times.

The Bruins do have fairly legit excuses for their recent struggles. With Milan Lucic (broken finger), Marc Savard (broken foot) and Phil Kessel (trade to Toronto) gone from the lineup, Boston is missing its entire first line from last season. It’s therefore easy to see why goals are hard to come by right now. While they wait for their top liners to return, the B’s will keep relying on resurgent Patrice Bergeron to generate offense. He’s finally hinting at the offensive prowess he showed before concussion problems derailed his career. Boston sure needs him tonight as it’s tough to imagine the Pens getting held off the scoresheet for a second straight game; the San Jose Sharks shut them out on Saturday night.

Is pressure mounting on Sidney Crosby? Playing without injured Evgeni Malkin, Sergei Gonchar and Kris Letang, he’s responded by going pointless in his last four games. As dominant as the Pens are, they go as their superstars go; it’s hard to tell how competitive Pittsburgh can be without one of Malkin or Crosby in the lineup.

DON’S PICK: In theory, the Bruins are a good NHL betting pick tonight. They’re playing at home and have been stymieing opponents of late; the Pens are likely exhausted as they conclude a road trip that pitted them against Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Jose and are depleted by injuries. However, the Pens proved last season that they’re a resilient bunch. Tonight’s game – one they should lose – will test their resolve. Let’s remember that these guys are the defending Stanley Cup champs and that Crosby captained that championship team last year. Don’t be surprised if Crosby carries them on his back tonight. Also, the Pens’ valuable role players – versatile forecheckers like Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy – are due to step up. I’d take advantage of the Pens’ rare underdog status and pick them.
