Horse race results - Key disappoints in All Stakes Pick 5

Horse racing betting: It Happened Again finishes eighth

  • WHO: 2YO Colt It Happened Again
  • WHAT: Horse racing results – $.50 All Stakes Pick 5
  • WHERE: Fair Grounds
  • WHEN: Saturday, December 20

The good news heading into Fair Grounds’ 9th Race last Saturday was that I was still alive in the All Stakes Pick 5. Unfortunately, there was plenty of bad news to temper my enthusiasm. The winners of the first four legs paid $5.60, $6.20, $3.20 and $7.80, respectively. Such low-priced winners effectively killed any chance for a decent score. To make matters worse, the horse I had singled in the final leg (#5-It Happened Again) would go off at 3.20-1, a far cry from his morning-line odds of 8-1. It gets worse…

The probable payoff on my $.50 Pick 5 ticket was $204.25…not bad if you consider that the equivalent parlay would pay $113.60. The problem was that I had invested $60 in the Pick 5 (see Friday’s article), so I was looking at a profit of $144.25. In effect, I would be getting 2.40-1 ($144.25/$60.00=2.40-1) on a horse (#5-It Happened Again) that would go off at 3.20-1. I figured a fair price on the #5 was 6-1 or better, so I was stuck with a huge underlay. It Happened Again was never a threat, finishing 8th in a field of 11. So much for my best laid plans…

Betting on exotics in horse racing, such as trifectas, superfectas, pick 3’s, 4’s, 5’s and 6’s, can be frustrating. There’s bound to be dry spells. But with solid handicapping, intelligent betting, patience and sound bankroll management, you can be successful in the long run. The occasional huge score will offset a lot of days like last Saturday.

Horse racing results on the New Mexico circuit don’t grab many headlines. However, the achievements of standout race mare Peppers Pride deserve a mention here. In the 10th Race at Sunland Park on Sunday, December 14th, 5YO Peppers Pride romped to her 19th win in as many starts. Her earnings topped the $1 million mark, and she did it the hard way, $50K at a time. Some may argue that Peppers Pride ducked the tougher competition of the major racing circuits, but my hat’s off to her and her team. She’s been a picture of class and consistency, and her record of perfection has never been equaled by a North American thoroughbred. She’s one of the reasons I love this sport.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!
