Calder Stakes Draw Overflow Fields
- Who: Thoroughbreds – Cherokee Queen, Rahy’s Attorney
- What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The My Charmer Handicap, The Tropical Park Turf Handicap
- Where: Calder Race Course
- When: Saturday, December 4th
The co-featured, Grade 3 My Charmer and Tropical Park Turf Handicaps this Saturday at Calder Race Course both drew overflow fields. A dozen competitors will head postward in each event. Both races offer stiff handicapping challenges and corresponding high payoffs for those able to ferret out the winners. Following are my picks to win:
After looking over a closely-matched field in The My Charmer, I came back to the rail horse – Cherokee Queen. This 5YO mare is trained by the redoubtable Marty Wolfson and will be piloted for the second time by rising star Luis Saez. Saez got familiar with his mount last out when defeating a tough allowance bunch on the Calder sod. They’ll be dropping 6 pounds off that winning effort. This jockey/trainer combo has clicked for an astounding 42% winners in 2009/2010! In early June, Cherokee Queen ran a bang-up 4th (losing by less than two lengths) in the Grade 1 Just A Game at Belmont Park, proving she ‘classes up’ well here. Cherokee Queen is now 2-for-2 locally, and turned in a solid 4-furlong breeze in preparation for this engagement. She should get a comfortable, ground-saving trip just off an expected honest pace. She already owns a win at the 1 1/8th-mile distance…number two could come here. I’ll bet on #1-Cherokee Queen to win and place at odds of 5-1 or better.
We’ll go from the inside post in The My Charmer to the outside post in The Tropical Park Turf! Surprisingly in a field of this size, there’s only one horse that appears to be comfortable going to the early lead…#12-Rahy’s Attorney. That’s where I expect him to be, but if another horse wants to go with him, he’s just as effective pressing the issue. This 6YO win machine (11-for-26 on grass) is in sharp form, and turned in a bullet 4-furlong breeze last Sunday at Payson Park for trainer Ian Black. The co-highweight (with #3-Never on Sunday) at 120 lbs. is accustomed to carrying a higher impost, so that shouldn’t be an issue. It’s also nice to see a top rider like Edgar Prado taking the mount. I’m expecting Rahy’s Attorney to bag career win #13 here, but just in case, I’ll bet him to win and place at odds of 3-1 or better.
Those are my horse racing betting tips for this weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
