Last Weekend’s Grade 1 races at Belmont Park and Del Mar respectively yielded some juicy payoffs in online betting, and the winners weren’t impossible to have.
Funny Moon, sent off at 7.60-1, captured The Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park in a driving, last-to-first finish. She was a mere 5-2 on the morning line, so there was significant value in her final odds. Perhaps bettors were skeptical of her chances based on the fact that her three lifetime wins came on “off” tracks. In retrospect, her next-to-last-place finish in The Acorn was the aberration, and note she was steadied in that race. My selection, Livin Lovin, never picked up a hoof, and checked in fifth. No damage was done, however, because she fell far short of my minimum odds requirement of 2-1. The racebook bettors sent her off at 1.05-1, making her a severe underlay.
The Eddie Read Handicap was a strangely-run race. The speedy Thorn Song was sent to the early lead, with even-money favorite Monterey Jazz stalking in second. However, when Thorn Song bolted to the outside fence going into the first turn, Monterey Jazz had to steady momentarily, then tugged his way to a commanding lead on the backstretch. Jockey Tyler Baze was unable to get him to relax, and his mount had nothing left for the stretch run. Global Hunter (14.10-1) was the ultimate beneficiary of all the commotion up front, taking the lead in mid-stretch and holding on gamely for a one-length victory over 8-1 shot Awesome Gem. Interestingly, Global Hunter’s best race came over this course last summer, when he finished third by a length to Whatsthescript. The roles were reversed in this race, with my selection, Whatsthescript, finishing 1 ¾ lengths back in third at odds of 2.90-1.
This promises to be an exciting week of horse racing, with Saratoga and Del Mar offering stakes races on a daily basis. Let hope this week’s horse racing betting results give us something to cheer about.
