Horse racing betting odds - hitting Calder’s Florida Million Day Pick 4

Posted by Pete Mitchell on 9/11/2009 11:45:28 AM

Horse racing betting odds: Florida Million Day as good as it gets

  • WHO: A Host of Thoroughbred Contenders
  • WHAT: Florida Million Day, Pick 4 (Races 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  • WHERE: Calder Race Course
  • WHEN: Saturday, November 8

For those of us who enjoy handicapping and betting on stakes races, Florida Million Day at Calder Race Course is about as good as it gets. Saturday’s 12-race card features eight stakes races for Florida-breds. Four of those races (5-6-7-8) comprise THE BIG 4, with a 50 cent minimum.

This allows the casual bettor with a limited bankroll to structure an affordable ticket, with an opportunity for a nice score. It also offers value to the more sophisticated bettor, because there’s generally more “square” money in these types of betting pools, creating appetizing horse racing betting odds.

Let’s look at races 5-8 and put together a winning ticket. First, however, consider a few guiding principles. 1) Try to single at least one race. This will give us room to spread in the other legs. 2) Don’t be afraid to use some “bombs”, which, if they hit, will explode the payoff. 3) Try to avoid hitting the “All” button. More often than not, this is a result of sloppy handicapping that costs us money in the long run. 4) Wait until a few minutes before post time of the first leg to submit your play. This helps account for late scratches or a change in weather/track condition. 5) Local horses often have a decided advantage over shippers, who may not take to Calder’s unusual dirt racing surface and often are sent off at underlaid horse racing betting odds.

Race 5: #3 Big Push (sharp shipper; trainer good with 2YO’s); #5 Sayers (cuts back; won last two sprinting); #7 Three Part Harmony (no Big Drama to deal with); #8 Biblionico (sharp barn; looked good last out).

Race 6: #1 Cumana (1-for-1 on lawn); #2 Ameribelle (beat winners in only grass try); #3 Hot Chili Pepper (trainer/jockey combo on fire); #4 Princess Town (nice effort behind Ameribelle); #5 Never Lie (tried toughies last out; finds softer spot) #6 August Rush (won only turf try at Saratoga); #12 Exe (top trainer; should like lawn).

Race 7: #5 Frolic’s Dream (undefeated; huge speed figure last out; trained well since).

Race 8: #3 Yesbyjimminy (on four-race winning streak); #5 Ruby’s Red Socks (sharp form; gets class test); #6 Like Now (classy; freaked last out in slop; tries Calder again); #7 Dukes Flying Tiger (always right there).

There you have it…3,5,7,8/1,2,3,4,5,6,12/5/3,5,6,7…50 cent ticket costs $56.00. Best of luck!
