Horse Racing Betting Results - Two Close...and One Cigar
- Who: Thoroughbreds – Straight Story, Misremembered, Icon Project
- What: Horse Racing Results – The Virginia Derby, The Swaps, The Delaware Handicap
- Where: Colonial Downs, Hollywood Park, Delaware Park
- When: Saturday, July 17th
Our picks to bet horses over the weekend ran pretty well, with a winner and a pair of seconds, but I was left with an empty feeling after Straight Story suffered another gut-wrenching loss (by a head at 6.10-1) to Battle of Hastings in The Virginia Derby. Straight Story returned $6.00 to place and $5.20 to show, so there was money to be made if you backed him up (I didn’t...poor execution on my part). It’s also amazing that the $2 exacta returned $51.20, with these two duplicating their most recent order of finish. Hold Me Back offered no value as the 1.60-1 chalk making his turf debut, and he checked in a dull 5th.
Misremembered got the job done at 4.10-1 in The Swaps, leading favored Grazen on a merry chase. Note my comment in Friday’s article for sports betting online: “Misremembered tuned up for this event with a bullet six-furlong move in 1:13, and it will be interesting to see if he leads or stalks this time around.” I had a feeling that given Misremembered’s inside position on Grazen, the instructions might be to hustle him away from the gate and make the favorite chase. That’s exactly what happened. It’s a beautiful thing when a plan comes together. The $2 exacta returned a respectable $21.80 with the .70-1 choice second.
The Delaware Handicap was a strangely-run race, to the detriment of Icon Project’s chances. Swift Temper was allowed to set dawdling fractions on the front end, and for some unknown reason, favored Unbridled Belle never got involved early. Icon Project rallied four-wide to get second, but the race was essentially over when they passed the six-furlong marker in 1:14 3/5 on a speed-favoring track. Icon Project returned $4.20 to place and $3.40 to show as the 5-2 second choice.
I hope you took better advantage of these horse racing betting results than I did. Good luck this week.
