The story of the Thanksgiving weekend in the world of horse racing was the performance of The Usual Q. T. in The Hollywood Derby. Even more important to horse players at the racebook was the price he paid.
The Usual Q. T. entered the Hollywood Derby on a four-race win streak, which included the Grade 2 Oak Tree Derby in his most recent start. In that race, he defeated favored Battle of Hastings (9-5) by a head. Battle of Hastings was favored once again in The Hollywood Derby at 2.60-1, while The Usual Q. T. was sent off as the tepid co-second choice (along with Take the Points) at odds of 4.70-1. Prior to the race, trainer Jimmy Cassidy expressed his amazement that there were still doubts among bettors about his horse’s capabilities. He insisted that The Usual Q. T. was doing even better for this engagement. His confidence was vindicated when The Usual Q. T. powered home to win by 1 ½ lengths, with Battle of Hastings once again relegated to second. The win mutuel of $11.40 proved to be a bargain.
Readers of Friday’s article will know that I liked Unrivaled Belle in The Gazelle at odds of 2-1 or better. She turned in a solid effort to get second at odds of exactly 2-1, but no one was going to catch run-away winner Flashing. In The Cigar Mile, I liked the Godolphin entry of Pyro and Vineyard Haven to complete the Grade 1 stakes daily double. Vineyard Haven fought gamely to get third, losing by less than a length. Kodiak Kowboy won with a powerful late surge, and Bribon edged Vineyard Haven for the place spot.
Later that day, Ventura won The Matriarch with authority, making all of us who were fans of the late, great Bobby Frankel feel good about the countless fond memories he left us with. Ventura will certainly go down as one of the best horses Frankel ever trained. I liked her to win, but her final odds of 3-5 were a bit too low for my taste.
Those were the weekend’s horse racing betting results of note. I hope you were able to turn a profit. Best of luck this week, and happy gambling!
