Horse Racing Betting - The Futurity/Matron double pays dividends

- Who: Thoroughbreds – D’Funnybone, Awesome Maria, Dashing Debby
- What: Horse Racing Betting Results – The Futurity, The Matron
- Where: Belmont Park
- When: Saturday, September 19th
When you leave an odds-on favorite out of a multiple race wager, you’ll usually get an overlaid price on the winning combination. That proved to be the case in last Saturday’s Futurity/Matron Double at Belmont Park. Those who read Friday’s article will know that I recommended singling favorite #6-D’ Funnybone in The Futurity, and using #4-Awesome Maria and #6-Dashing Debby in The Matron. That meant leaving out favored Worstcasescenario, who went off at .90-1. She looked pretty good on paper, but off her prior upset victory at odds of nearly 14-1, I felt she was a huge underlay...so I took a stand against her. D’Funnybone romped in The Futurity and paid $2.90. Awesome Maria won The Matron by nearly three lengths and paid $9.50. The Futurity/Matron Double paid a generous $26.40 in online sports betting. Why is that generous, you ask? Well, if you compare the double payoff of $26.40 to the two-horse parlay payoff of $13.78, you’re looking at real value! Add a zero to your wager and it gets a bit more interesting...$264.00 vs. $137.80. Add another zero, and...well, you get the picture. The other thing to keep in mind is that your initial investment of $4.00 (1 X 2 X $2.00) returned a profit of 560% ($26.40 - $4.00 = $22.40/$4.00 = 560% profit). If you had included the losing favorite in The Matron, your profit margin would have been reduced to 340% ($26.40 - $6.00 = $20.40/$6.00 = 340% profit). Also, if the favorite (who finished 8th) had won, it’s questionable whether your wager would have turned a profit. The two horse parlay payoff with the two favorites would have returned $5.51...not enough to cover the $6.00 investment. If you bet horses, I hope you profited from the horse racing results highlighted above. Best of luck this week!
