Horse Racing Betting - Careless Jewel, Internallyflawless sparkle in Grade 1 debuts

- Who: Thoroughbreds – Careless Jewel, Internallyflawless, Rachel Alexandra
- What: Horse Racing Betting – The Alabama, The Del Mar Oaks
- Where: Saratoga, Del Mar
- When: Saturday, August 22nd
Careless Jewel followed up her dominant performance in The Delaware Oaks (Grade 2) with an even more impressive outing in The Alabama (Grade 1) at Saratoga on Saturday. The Josie Carroll trainee was steadied sharply during the early going and showed she could be effective stalking the pace, as she waited until the far turn to take over from pacesetter Be Fair and draw off to an 11-length victory. It was her first try in Grade 1 race, and she stamped herself as the best 3YO filly not named Rachel Alexandra. My selection, Don’t Forget Gil, encountered some early traffic trouble, and checked in 5th at odds of 5-1. On the left coast, where the surf meets the turf, Internallyflawless made her Grade 1 debut a winning one in The Del Mar Oaks. She worked out a nice stalking trip under the guidance of Garrett Gomez, and prevailed by a half-length in a game effort. Favorite Well Monied made a big move heading into the far turn, but could not sustain her momentum and was all-out for the show money. I set my acceptable odds limit on her at 3-2, but ignored my own advice and played her at an underlaid price of 1.10-1. Once again, the importance of discipline in racebook betting reared its ugly head. Speaking of Rachel Alexandra, it was great to hear that she’ll be tackling older horses in The Woodward (Grade 1) at Saratoga on Saturday, September 5th. She is bidding to become the only filly ever to win that prestigious event. If she holds her razor-sharp form, you’d be wise not to be betting against her. After that race, she may meet up with the undefeated Zenyatta in The Beldame (Grade 1) at Belmont Park on Saturday, October 3rd. That would be the biggest event in horse racing in many years. Let’s hope that “the powers that be” can pull it off.
