Horse racing odds – Big Brown wins and other news in horse racing
Horse racing betting: Big Brown wins prep race for Breeder’s Cup Classic
WHO: Big Brown and others
WHAT: Stakes Races, Pick 6 Action, etc.
WHERE: Monmouth Park, Belmont Park, Arlington Park, Philadelphia Park
WHEN: September 12 – 15
The big news last weekend was Big Brown’s victory over a salty group of older turfers at Monmouth Park. The race was created as a prep for Big Brown’s Breeders’ Cup Classic engagement, which we’re anxiously awaiting horse racing odds for. The race turned into a highly competitive affair, as top trainers including Frankel, McLaughlin and Mott joined the fray.
They were well represented by Proudinsky, Shakis and Silver Tree, respectively, and those three runners followed Big Brown under the wire, as he sped to a hard-earned gate-to-wire win in fast time (1:47 2/5) over a course labeled “good”. The race served its purpose as a steppingstone to the Classic and should set Big Brown up nicely for his first try on Santa Anita’s artificial surface.
On Friday, there was a $608,000 Pick 6 carryover at Belmont Park. I took a shot at the “big money” with a good friend of mine. We invested $9,000 in the exotic wager, but after hitting the first five races, we were dismayed to see that of the five horses we used in the last leg, three resulted in a substantial net loss.
One was a “break even” proposition, and only one yielded a significant profit on our investment. The “break even” horse won and we also had 19 tickets with five-of-six winners, but after the IRS withholding, we got back a few hundred bucks less than our original investment. Belmont’s bettors are the sharpest in the business…I’ll probably stick with the West Coast tracks when my urge for Pick 6 horse racing odds strikes again.
On Saturday, I made a sizeable win/place wager on the Todd Pletcher-trained Advice in The Arlington-Washington Futurity at my minimum-acceptable horse racing odds of 7-2. A ho-hum second-place effort got more interesting when the “objection/inquiry sign” started blinking against first-place finisher Jose Adan.
It was clear that he had interfered with third-place finisher Terrain in the stretch run and I had started counting my winnings when Advice’s number also started blinking. Ultimately, the top two finishers were taken down to second and third, respectively, and my visions of cashing were dashed on a double DQ!
The outcome at Philadelphia Park on Monday was much more rewarding, but you’ll have to check out my next article to find out what happened.
