Horse racing results: losing Pick 3 turns into winning plays

  • WHO: Thoroughbreds Alpha Kitten, Dakota Phone
  • WHAT: Santa Anita Stakes Pick 3
  • WHERE: Santa Anita
  • WHEN: Saturday, January 17

If you read Friday’s article, you’ll know that I keyed 3YO colt Square Eddie in Santa Anita’s All Stakes Pick 3 (Races 6 - 8) on Saturday. The ticket that I recommended looked like this: 3,9/6/1,2,7,12. In the first leg, #3-Pinkarella was scratched, leaving me with singles in the first two legs, and four horses in the final leg. Here’s how things unfolded:

I decided that the price on #9-Alpha Kitten in Race 6 was a fair one, so I bet her to win at odds of 1.50-1. Alpha Kitten got the job done and paid for my Pick 3 wager. Unfortunately, #6-Square Eddie was in need of his first start in nearly three months and finished second to a loose-on-the-lead #1-The Pamplemousse. Not the horse racing results I was looking for, as it knocked me out of my Pick 3 wager. Undaunted, however, I found serious value in Race 8, and took advantage.

Amazingly, #12-Dakota Phone was being overlooked in the betting at 17.30-1. He had finished a fast-closing fourth in his previous start, missing third by a half-length to El Gato Malo, despite swinging five-wide into the stretch.

On Saturday, he received a favorable 6-lb. weight shift from El Gato Malo, yet that rival went off at a measly 4.60-1! It also didn’t hurt that Dakota Phone was being piloted for the first time by the magical Garrett Gomez, who was able to work out a decent trip from the difficult post 12.

Dakota Phone ran second to fellow longshot Nownownow (18.20-1), who was notching his first win since capturing the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in 2007. I bet Dakota Phone across the board, and he paid $14.00 to place and $6.80 to show…not bad horse racing results!

So, what started out as a losing Pick 3 ticket turned into a couple of solid winning plays and a net profit for the day. I love this sport!
