Horse Racing Betting - Persistence turns losses into profit

- Who: Thoroughbreds – Quality Road
- What: Horse Racing Betting Results – The Ballerina, The King’s Bishop, The Travers, Race 13
- Where: Saratoga
- When: Saturday, August 29th
If you read Friday’s article, you’ll know that I structured a Grade 1 Pick 3 betting wager at Saratoga on Saturday (Races 10-12). The most significant aspect of the bet was that I was not using probable Travers favorite Quality Road on any of my tickets. Things didn’t start off well when Music Note unexpectedly recaptured her 3YO form to win The Ballerina convincingly over co-favored Indian Blessing (2nd) and Informed Decision (3rd). I took a stand against Informed Decision in that race and won the battle...but lost the war. Music Note paid $13.60. I then played a Daily Double in races 11 and 12, using Munnings and Big Drama in The King’s Bishop, and Summer Bird, Charitable Man and Kensei in The Travers. That horse racing bet went south when Vineyard Haven and Capt. Candyman Can finished one-two in Race 11. The official order of finish was reversed when Vineyard Haven was DQ’d and placed second, but it didn’t matter to me because Munnings could only manage a distant third. Undaunted, I used the same three horses in The Travers with probable favorite Whirlwind Poppy in Race 13. This final Daily Double was my last shot to wind up a little bit ahead for the day. Race 13 was originally carded for a NY-Bred MSW bunch going 1 1/16th miles on the Widener Turf Course. However, the race was taken off the grass and moved to the main track going 1 1/8th miles. Whirlwind Poppy had two races under his belt...a turf sprint and a turf stretchout. He appeared to be the speed of the race from the rail, and possessed decent dirt breeding, being by Millennium Wind (a son of Cryptoclearance). He had trained very well on dirt, and was in the very capable hands of trainer Mike Maker and jockey Julien Leparoux. Summer Bird won the Travers with authority, as favored Quality Road weakened late to finish third. Whirlwind Poppy romped in the last race by just over eight lengths. The late Daily Double got hammered down just before the gates opened, and returned $28.80 for a $2 wager. Sometimes it pays to stick to your guns when you bet horses, even when you’re down to your last few bullets. Here’s hoping that your horse racing betting results for the week turn a profit.
