Horse racing tips - Saturday’s Stakes Action Fizzles Out
Horse racing tips: Post-time circumstances can ruin a ticket
- WHO: Thoroughbreds – Tend, Fitz Just Right, Mambo Meister, Noble Court
- WHAT: Saturday’s Stakes Races
- WHERE: Fair Grounds, Aqueduct, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita
- WHEN: Saturday, January 10
In Friday’s “weekend preview” article, I spotlighted four horses that I thought would do well in stakes action around the country on Saturday. What makes these horse racing tips problematic, however, is that circumstances often change by post time, and sometimes the odds don’t cooperate either. Weather, scratches, jockey changes, paddock and post-parade demeanor, and a host of other things can conspire to make earlier decisions look foolish.
At Fair Grounds the rain held off, and the fifth race went as scheduled on the grass. I would have liked Tend if the race had been switched to the main track, but he was scratched. Tend was also entered in the sixth race, carded for the main oval, where he would face a much tougher bunch of dirt specialists. His post-time odds of 7-2 were not nearly high enough against that salty field of 10. I passed. Tend ran fourth, 4 ¾ lengths behind the winner, Good and Lucky.
In the Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct, I was interested in a filly named Fitz Just Right. Her morning line odds were 8-1, and I would have bet her at odds of 6-1 or better. At 5.30 -1, she wasn’t worth a play. She finished a decent fourth, beaten 1 ¾ lengths by 12.40-1 long shot Pumpkin Shell.
It was more of the same in the Ft. Lauderdale Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Mambo Meister was my pick at odds of 5-1 or better. He went off as the 4.70-1 second choice and didn’t merit a play. He ran a troubled sixth, beaten only one length for all the money. 11.30-1 long shot Kiss the Kid prevailed by a neck over Society’s Chairman to take down the top prize.
I felt that probable favorite Well Armed was vulnerable in the San Pasqual Handicap at Santa Anita. He was, finishing fourth. Unfortunately, my selection, Noble Court, couldn’t take advantage…he was scratched.
In a thoroughly unsatisfying racing day, I made no bets after putting in a considerable amount of handicapping work. All the horse racing tips in the world won’t help when the circumstances dictate things like this weekend. On the bright side, given the horse racing results, I would have lost money had I taken the unattractive prices that were offered. The bankroll is intact for another day at the races! Good luck and happy gambling.
