Illinois Derby results – Derby trail unchanged after Illinois, Wood, Santa Anita
When I wrote Friday’s article trying to predict Illinois Derby results, I felt that the weekend Kentucky Derby preps looked pretty chalky, but that maybe Perfect Song could shake things up a bit at odds of 9-2 or better.
That was not to be, as Perfect Song tired from his pace-setting efforts to finish seventh on horse racing odds. There are also results in from the Wood Memorial and the Santa Anita Derby.
Illinois Derby results: No real surprises on the Derby trail
- WHO: Musket Man, I Want Revenge, Pioneerof the Nile
- WHAT: The Illinois Derby, The Wood Memorial, The Santa Anita Derby
- WHERE: Hawthorne, Aqueduct, Santa Anita
- WHEN: Saturday, April 4
The favored Musket Man ($2.80-1) won with second choice Giant Oak two lengths back in second. 1-2 favorite I Want Revenge captured the Wood Memorial and 4-5 shot Pioneerof the Nile annexed the Santa Anita Derby, providing us with no real surprises on the Kentucky Derby trail last weekend.
I was willing to make a win bet on Perfect Song at odds of 9-2, but passed when his post-time odds dipped to just over 3-1. I did bet on I Want Revenge at a short price (1-2) because, as I said Friday, “I can’t see him getting beat under any circumstances.”
Well, his circumstances proved to be extremely difficult, as he broke in the air, spotting the field several lengths at the start, and had to wait behind a wall of horses nearing the top of the stretch before swinging five wide and splitting horses to win by a length-and-a-half in a hand ride. I Want Revenge is something special! The Pamplemousse was scratched from the Santa Anita Derby due to a tendon injury, opening the door for Pioneerof the Nile and second choice Chocolate Candy to run one-two.
The results were mostly good for Derby hopeful Dunkirk, whose connections are sweating out his eligibility due to marginal graded earnings ($150,000). With the favorites all winning, the only horse to pass him in graded earnings over the weekend was Giant Oak. Dunkirk is currently tied for 19th in graded earnings, and a few of the horses above him are doubtful Derby participants.
So much for a weekend of unexciting horse racing results, at least as far as the pari-mutuel payoffs were concerned. Make sure you check out the Kentucky Derby odds and stay tuned with the Betting Edge, where you can get Illinois Derby results and other Racebook tips.
