Kentucky Derby Picks - And The Winner Is…
Luck as usual will play a big part of who wins the Run for the Roses this Saturday but there are some interesting runners and everybody should be of some value as online horse sports betting experts have 20 options starting with tepid morning line favorite Dialed In at 4-1.
Dialed In is a legit 2011 Kentucky Derby betting contender. He had to overcome a speed bias in the Florida Derby and the connections did the right thing by just letting him run his race rather than fool around with his drop back style. In his only loss Dialed In could not overcome the slow 1:13 4/5 pace up front.
That probably won’t be a factor in the Derby horse betting as the pace is generally frantic.
This son of Mineshaft is consistent and with clear sailing, should be in the thick of it at crunch time.
Nero fiddled while Rome burned but Nehro the horse will be the one burning up the octane in the final 2 furlongs on Saturday.
The pedigree is there for him to thrive at a mile and a quarter as his half brother Saint Marden took a Grade 3 stakes at 9 furlongs with a 105 Beyer.
He will be dependent on a hot pace, but again should get it. As far as betting, he could come up as the wise-guy horse and get overplayed but he figures to be flying late.
And he gets one of the strongest riders in the sport in Corey Nakatani, who has won 7 Breeders’ Cup races and will be looking to make lucky 13 his first win in the Kentucky Derby.
Until his loss Uncle Mo was looking like the one to beat this year but after it was discovered that he had a virus, everything changed.
He did show signs of life in his April 26 work of 1:01.69. The fact he worked together and impressively with Grade 3 winning stablemate Calibracchoa should have only helped him. Expect him to be ask for speed from the get go and don’t be shocked if he has plenty of company up front.
The concern here is how much did he lose fitness wise after the poor effort in the Wood? You don’t want to have anything go wrong on the way to the biggest stage so he is a bit iffy.
Midnight Interlude is a now horse as he rated taking the Santa Anita Derby but he will try to be only the second horse in history to win the Derby without racing at 2 and many have tried. On a positive note, he has the blood on the bottom side to run all day.
Mucho Macho Man had a valid excuse when he threw a show in the Louisiana Derby. He has already raced twice at 9 furlongs and he showed heart in his last race. Like everyone else he’ll be challenged to get 10 furlongs but he has the positional speed that will give him first run on the deep closers.
Master of Hounds is a wild card of the outsiders. He’ll be a betting number and he’s the only runner in the Derby with a race at a mile and three sixteenths. He was beaten a dirty nose that day but was over 3 lengths clear of his nearest rival.
Being by Kingmambo, his pedigree is interesting as another son of Kingmambo, Lemon Drop Kid, won the Belmont Stakes at 12 furlongs.
His connections know what they are doing and they have had success
So who wins after the most exciting 2 minutes in sport?
Expect a hot and heavy pace to kick things off with Uncle Mo and Midnight Interlude fighting up front.
At the top of the lane Dialed In will make his move and put his head in front but with 100 yards to go Nehro rallies on the outside of all of them to get up by a half a length with 20-1 starter Master of Hounds completing the exacta.
Good luck and have a Mint Julep for me.
