Lane’s End results – Hold Me Back enters Derby picture

Posted by Pete Mitchell on 8/31/2009 7:09:58 AM
lane's end resultsFortunes can be made when the favorites run out. That’s what happened in Saturday’s Lane’s End results at Turfway Park, and a few astute players made huge scores at the Racebook as a result. Post time favorite West Side Bernie ($2.10-1) finished a non-threatening sixth, and second choice Bittel Road ($2.30-1) checked in tenth. Their absence from the superfecta resulted in a payoff of $81,889.20 for a $2 ticket!

Lane's End results: Hold Me Back impresses

  • WHO: Thoroughbreds Bittel Road, West Side Bernie
  • WHAT: The Lane’s End
  • WHERE: Turfway Park
  • WHEN: Saturday, March 21

#1-Hold Me Back made his 3YO debut a winning one at odds of $9.10-1, and in doing so, thrust himself squarely into the Kentucky Derby picture. Trained by Hall-of-Famer Bill Mott and ridden by Mott’s “go-to” guy Kent Desormeaux, Hold Me Back extended his perfect polytrack mark to 3-for-3 with a powerful closing kick, stopping the timer in a solid 1:49 3/5.

If you read Friday’s article in this space, you’ll know that we used the top-four finishers in the second, third and fourth, but we keyed the two favorites in the top slot, to no avail. Hold Me Back’s breeding is certainly as good as, if not better than, any of his Lane’s End rivals, so the main question was readiness. Mott knows how to get a horse legged up over the deep Payson training track, and Hold Me Back’s work pattern was exceptionally strong, with a trio of bullets on display.

With a bit of imagination and a modicum of intestinal fortitude (necessary ingredients in horse racing betting), we could have used him in the top slot with the two chalks and made a huge score. Remember that big weekend stakes cards are the time to spread in the exotics and shoot for a life-changing mutuel.

At this stage of the Derby trail, my Derby Dozen (in order of preference) are as follows: I Want Revenge; Friesan Fire; Dunkirk; Rachel Alexandra; The Pamplemousse; Imperial Council; Quality Road;  Pioneerof the Nile; Chocolate Candy; Theregoesjojo; Desert Party; Hold Me Back.
