Louisiana Derby results - Friesan Fire, Rachel Alexandra Impress
Friesan Fire confirmed his status as one of the Kentucky Derby favorites with an emphatic 7 ¼-length score in Louisiana Derby results, run over a sloppy/sealed Fair Grounds main track. He was sent off as the $2.20-1 chalk in the 1 1/16th-mile event and cruised under the wire in 1:43.46. None of his eight rivals mounted much of a challenge, and all would appear to be long shots at best in the Run for the Roses.
Louisiana Derby results: Derby prep action continues
- WHO: Thoroughbreds – Friesan Fire, Rachel Alexandra
- WHAT: The Louisiana Derby, The Fair Grounds Oaks
- WHERE: Fair Grounds
- WHEN: Saturday, March 14
Earlier on card, the filly Rachel Alexandra made short work of her opposition in The Fair Grounds Oaks, winning eased up by 1 ¾ lengths in a time of 1:43.55, just .09 of a second slower than Friesan Fire. At this stage of the game, her connections insist that she’ll run in The Kentucky Oaks, but perhaps they’ll contract Derby fever in the coming weeks and take a shot vs. the boys. If not, it will be fascinating to see her square off against 2YO filly champ Stardom Bound and Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Oaks Future Wager chalk Justwhistledixie.
In other horse racing odds last Saturday, $.30-1 favorite Pioneerof the Nile delivered a workmanlike performance to win The San Felipe, but his hard-earned victory didn’t win over many new backers. Nevertheless, it’s on to The Santa Anita Derby and a date with The Pamplemousse.
At Oaklawn Park, $56.80-1 shot Win Willy came from the clouds to upset highly-regarded Old Fashioned. With a 2 ½-length lead at the eighth pole, 2-5 favorite Old Fashioned appeared headed for victory, but Win Willy came roaring down the middle of the track to win going away. Pulling trainer excuse #596 out of the bag, Larry Jones said that the eventual winner was so wide that his horse probably didn’t see him. Whatever, Larry…
Finally, the Tampa Bay Derby went to the locally-based Musket Man. The talented shipper Hello Broadway (favored at 2-1) raced wide throughout and didn’t appear to care for the quirky racing surface. He checked in seventh in a field of 10.
Those are the most significant horse racing results for Triple Crown hopefuls in action last weekend. None did enough to sway me from my opinion that I Want Revenge is the best one out there at this time.
