The Peter Pan and the Lone Star Derby previews - Sunland Park Derby still rippling
According to the racebook and horse betting players alike, The Sunland Park Derby is already considered to be a “super key” race, having produced The Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and The Lexington Stakes winner Advice. On Saturday, several others who exited that race will be going postward in either The Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park or The Lone Star Derby at Lone Star Park.
- Who: Thoroughbreds – Scorewithcater, Mayor Marv, Mythical Power
- What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Peter Pan, The Lone Star Derby
- Where: Belmont Park, Lone Star Park
- When: Saturday, May 9th
Scorewithcater finished third in the Sunland Park Derby, defeating both Mine That Bird (4th) and Advice (5th), yet he will be a rank outsider in The Peter Pan. The problem: low Beyer Speed Figures. With a lifetime best of 81, Scorewithcater won’t get much respect at the windows, especially from jaded New York fans that tend to look down their noses at invaders from places like Sunland Park. However, with human connections like trainer Doug O’Neill and jockey Ramon Dominguez, this horse could easily outrun his odds.
Hello Broadway, Charitable Man and Imperial Council will vie for favoritism in horse racing betting at The Peter Pan. Hello Broadway is still immature, so the addition of blinkers may help him focus. Charitable Man’s 3YO debut in The Blue Grass Stakes was disappointing, but perhaps he didn’t care for Keeneland’s poly-track surface. He’s already a Grade 2 winner at Belmont. Imperial Council fell in the paddock prior to The Wood, so his fade in the stretch can be forgiven. I’m going to stick with Hello Broadway, who I’ve liked ever since he out-gamed Imperial Council in their respective career debuts. I’ll bet him to win at odds of 5-2 or better.
Mayor Marv and Mythical Power finished at opposite ends of the Sunland Park Derby spectrum. Mayor Marv (11th) beat one horse, while Mythical Power (2nd) was beaten by just one horse, the talented Kelly Leak. Note that #2-Cape Truth defeated Mythical Power on February 13th at Santa Anita, but that was a one-turn event on the Pro-Ride surface. Mythical Power has established form going two turns on dirt, and he will be my selection at odds of 2-1 or better.
Those are my horse racing betting tips for the weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
