The connections of Mine That Bird had originally planned to run in The Kentucky Derby, skip Preakness odds and wait for The Belmont Stakes, giving their horse a comfortable 5-week gap between races. Those plans changed when Mine That Bird scored a monumental upset in The Run for the Roses.
The diminutive gelding flew up the rail in the home stretch under the brilliant and courageous guidance of jockey Calvin “bo-rail” Borel, to win going away by nearly seven lengths, causing due celebration by racebook bettors. He paid $103.20, making him the second-longest priced winner in Kentucky Derby history. Mine That Bird earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 105, an incredible 24 points higher than his previous lifetime best. On Monday, trainer Bennie Woolley Jr. confirmed that Mine That Bird would run in The Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 16th.
There will be plenty of competition lined up to take on the Derby champ. Following is a list of the probable Preakness starters:

If Mine That Bird goes off favored in Preakness betting, he’ll be a lukewarm choice at best. Derby runner-up Pioneerof the Nile, winner of four straight graded events on the West Coast prior to the Derby, will receive plenty of support. Others expected to be well-backed include Derby third and fourth-place finishers Musket Man and Papa Clem. New shooters Hull and Mr. Fantasy will add quality front-end speed to this second jewel of Triple Crown betting.
Check back next week for a Preakness update and other thoroughbred horse racing news and views. Until then, happy gambling!
