Rachel Alexandra held off a fast-closing Mine That Bird to become the first filly in 85 years to capture the Preakness. Both horses turned in courageous efforts. Rachel Alexandra dueled for the lead outside of Big Drama for the first six furlongs.
The fractions of :23, :46 3/5, and 1:11 were certainly honest on a track listed as “fast” but nevertheless somewhat tiring.
Belmont Stakes: Rachel Alexandra under consideration
- WHO: Mine That Bird, Rachel Alexandra, Charitable Man
- WHAT: The Belmont Stakes
- WHERE: Belmont Park
- WHEN: Saturday, June 6
Rachel Alexandra dispatched that rival and opened a 4-length lead at the head of the stretch, winning by a diminishing length. Mine That Bird had to weave his way through traffic and was finishing fastest of all at the end. Rachel Alexandra returned $5.60 to her backers, and considering the recent accomplishments of both horses, the exacta paid an extremely generous $39.20.
Mine That Bird continues to thrive after the first two legs of the Triple Crown and is a definite starter for the Belmont Stakes on June 6th. It is unknown who will ride the pint-sized gelding at this time, as Mike Smith has a prior commitment, and Calvin Borel will stick with Rachel Alexandra if she runs. Her status for the Belmont Stakes should become clear after her next scheduled workout, on Monday, May 25.

Of the new shooters, Charitable Man should pose the main threat. He’s coming off an impressive 3 ¾-length score in the Peter Pan at Belmont Park.
