Sunshine Millions Classic for the Birds
Horse racing results: It’s a Bird wins, Delightful Kiss disappoints
- WHO: Thoroughbred It’s a Bird
- WHAT: Sunshine Millions Classic
- WHERE: Gulfstream Park
- WHEN: Saturday, January 24
On a day when five-of-six dirt races were won by horses setting or pressing the pace, it’s no wonder that deep closer Delightful Kiss struggled to hit the board in the Sunshine Millions Classic at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. The victory went to Marty Wolfson trainee It’s a Bird (son of sprinter Birdonthewire), with Dry Martini a distant second (by more than five lengths) and 2-1 favorite Delightful Kiss a nose back in third.
I saved money by passing on Delightful Kiss to win, as he failed to meet my minimum odds requirement of 5-2. However, I still keyed him first and second in exactas with Macho Again (7th), Atoned (8th) and Hey Byrn (10th). At the last minute, I added Dry Martini (2nd) to the mix, but It’s a Bird spoiled the party.
A good friend of mine enjoyed more positive horse racing results when he bet $250 across the board on #3-Precious Passion in the Sunshine Millions Turf (Race 6) at Santa Anita on Saturday. I’ve written about this horse in the past because, for whatever reason, he never gets respect at the betting windows.
In his last four wins, this horse racing millionaire has gone off at odds of 7.60-1, 13.80-1, 20.30-1 and 67.10-1! I didn’t care for his chances on Saturday, mostly because of the cutback in distance; this turf marathoner had failed to hit the board in five tries at 1 1/8th miles on grass.
I bet the favorite at odds of 1.40-1, and he got the job done with a late surge to beat…you guessed it…Precious Passion, who went off at 9.20-1! Precious Passion paid $8.20 to place and $6.40 to show, and my friend pocketed $1,825, for a net profit of $1,075.
Look for my next article on Friday. Until then, good luck and happy gambling!
