The Withers and The Derby Trial results - Mr. Fantasy, Hull earn first stakes victories
Three-Year-Olds Mr. Fantasy and Hull thrust themselves into the racebook spotlight over the weekend with impressive wins in at Aqueduct and Churchill Downs, respectively. While their status for the second and third legs of The Triple Crown is uncertain at this time, they could certainly be major players in the 3YO ranks down the road.
Here we'll take a look at what the results of both The Withers and The Derby Trial could spell for all you horse racing bettors out there. Do we have any surprises?
The Withers and The Derby Trial results: Mr. Fantasy and Hull established in their fields
- Who: Thoroughbreds – Mr. Fantasy, Hull
- What: Horse Racing Results – The Withers, The Derby Trial
- Where: Aqueduct, Churchill Downs
- When: Saturday, April 25th
Mr. Fantasy’s reputation lost a bit of luster after he finished a tiring third to I Want Revenge and Imperial Council in The Gotham as the $2.30-1 favorite. He redeemed himself in The Withers, however, drawing off to a 1 ¾-length win as the field’s third choice at $3.30-1. Left in his wake was the highly-regarded This Ones for Phil, who finished a non-threatening second as the $1.85-1 chalk. My selection, Supreme Summit, stumbled at the start, then gunned for the lead while drifting out badly on the backside. He moved in toward the rail at the half-mile pole, then gave way while drifting out again in the stretch. He finished last in the compact field of five at odds of $4.70-1.
My other selection for the day, Hull, fared much better in his stakes debut. As I had anticipated, he stalked the pace while three wide down the backstretch, shook clear entering the stretch, and increased his advantage to the wire, winning The Derby Trial by four lengths. Hull returned $8.80 to his backers. I hope you were among them. Hull is now 3-for-3 lifetime, and is a possibility for The Preakness, as he was a late nominee for The Triple Crown.
