Triple Crown trail - I Want Revenge is the real deal
There’s a new shooter on the Triple Crown trail, and his name is I Want Revenge. In Friday’s horse betting article, I said the following about this Jeff Mullins trainee: “Another interesting Western invader who has yet to try dirt. He’s bred to like the Derby’s 1 ¼-mile distance, and could be a major factor on the first Saturday in May…if he passes his dirt test here. Regular rider Talamo ships in for the mount.”
Horse racing results: I Want Revenge makes his presence felt
- WHO: Thoroughbreds – I Want Revenge, Stardom Bound
- WHAT: The Gotham, The Santa Anita Oaks
- WHERE: Aqueduct, Santa Anita
- WHEN: Saturday, March 7
Well, I Want Revenge passed his dirt test with flying colors, and not only is he on my list of candidates on the Triple Crown trail, he’s my early pick to win the Run for the Roses.
What struck me most was this colt’s huge, effortless stride. As he was galloping down the Aqueduct backstretch in pursuit of Mr. Fantasy, it looked like he was taking two steps for every three of his rival. I Want Revenge ran straight and true through the stretch, posting a very fast final time of 1:42 3/5, and cruised under the wire with an 8 ½-length advantage.
I bet on Imperial Council to win and place in The Gotham at odds of 3.85-1. He just got up for second over Mr. Fantasy and paid $4.80 to place, so I posted a small profit. Down the road, however, I’ll be looking to cash big on I Want Revenge.
The horse racing results in the Santa Anita Oaks came as somewhat of a surprise, as Stardom Bound overcame a wide trip to win by a scant nose over a modest field. After the race, jockey Mike Smith said she was acting like she hadn’t even run…the race took nothing out of her. Maybe she’s getting bored beating up on members of her own sex. It’s questionable whether her connections will try her against colts off that lackadaisical effort. We’ll see. I hope they decide to take a shot…that would be fun to watch.
