Win parlays can be fun when you’re looking to hook up short-priced, logical favorites and turn your original (modest) investment into something more than the cost of admission. Let’s look at a win parlay I toyed around with last weekend.
I started out with a $200 win bet on #1-Into Mischief in The Malibu (G1) last Friday at Santa Anita. I was expecting odds of around 2-1, which was exactly what I got (2.20-1). However, I wasn’t expecting #3-Bob Black Jack to lead the field on a merry chase at 5-1, notching his first win in almost a year. Into Mischief closed for second, and my win parlay was dead on arrival.
Putting that loss aside, I started another win parlay on Saturday with a $200 bet on #2-Fabulous Strike in The Gravesend Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct. I was actually pleased to get him at 0.55-1, considering that four horses scratched out of the race, leaving a field of four. Normally a front-runner, Fabulous Strike displayed his versatility by stalking #7-True Quality into the stretch before drawing off to win by nearly two lengths. He paid $3.10 to win, so I had $310 rolling into the next leg.
Later that day I bet $310 to win on #4-Indian Blessing in The La Brea Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita. I was expecting her to be 3-5, and the betting public agreed. Like Fabulous Strike, she stalked front-running #6-Indyanne into the stretch and pulled away for a 1 ½-length victory, returning $3.20 to win. My $310 win bet returned $496, which I had plans for the following day.
It was my intention on Sunday to wrap up my weekend stakes win parlay with a bet on #2-Proudinsky in The San Gabriel Handicap (G2) at Santa Anita. I considered 7-2 to be a fair price on the horse, but the morning line odds were 5-2, and the Bobby Frankel trainee actually went off at underlaid odds of 1.30-1. I passed the race. Proudinsky won and paid $4.60.
Had I shown less discipline and bet on Proudinsky to win despite the unattractive odds, my $496 would have returned $1,140.80, for a weekend profit of $740.80 ($1,140.80 - $400 = $740.80)…not bad horse racing results given the modest investment. As it turned out, my weekend profit was $96 ($496 - $400 = $96). My decision to pass on Proudinsky was obviously bad in the short run, but I’m convinced that over the course of time, the discipline to pass on underlays will serve me well. Happy New Year and Happy Gambling!
