Whirlaway horse racing results: watch for Haynesfield on Triple Crown trail
- WHO: Haynesfield, Friesan Fire, Pioneerof the Nile, Stardom Bound
- WHAT: The Whirlaway, The Risen Star, The Robert B. Lewis, The Las Virgenes
- WHERE: Aqueduct, Fair Grounds, Santa Anita Park
- WHEN: Saturday, February 7
Haynesfield won as he pleased. Friesan Fire stalked the pace and drew off. Pioneerof the Nile got up late. All were impressive in their own way, but Stardom Bound won the day with her comeback victory in the Las Virgenes. In the process, she stamped her ticket for the Santa Anita Derby, and perhaps the big dance in Louisville on the first Saturday in May.
I went with Peace Town at odds of 3.45-1, but I didn’t get the Whirlaway horse racing results I wanted. Peace Town proved no match for Haynesfield after pressing the eventual winner down the backside. Although he hasn’t faced the stiffest of competition this winter on Aqueduct’s inner dirt, Haynesfield has four straight daylight victories to his credit, three in two-turn stakes events. He bears watching on the Triple Crown trail.
I had planned to bet on Indygo Mountain in the Risen Star, but he failed to meet my minimum odds requirement of 6-1. He was sent off the third choice at 5-1, and faded in the long Fair Grounds stretch to finish seventh. Friesan Fire rewarded trainer Larry Jones’ great faith in him by drawing off to a two-length score. Friesan Fire will be one of the favorites in the Louisiana Derby, along with Giant Oak (a fast-closing fifth in the Risen Star) and Patena.
Pioneerof the Nile ran to his recent excellent works in The Robert B. Lewis, rallying to win by a comfortable half-length. They passed the mile mark in 1:35.89, and the final time was a swift 1:41.90. Unfortunately, Shafted met my minimum odds requirement (5-1), being sent off at 6.90-1. He beat one horse.
Two-Year-Old Filly Champ Stardom Bound made her 3YO debut a winning one in The Las Virgenes. She stopped the clock in 1:36.43, which was .54 of a second slower than the fractional time in the Robert B. Lewis. She did it easily, however, and trainer Frankel admitted she was only 80 percent fit for her comebacker. It’s on to the Santa Anita Derby for Stardom Bound, as there are no worlds left to conquer in the 3YO filly division.
Those are Saturday’s Triple Crown trail horse racing results. Best of luck with this week’s horse racing action.
