UFC 92 betting will be the last chance that online sportsbook customers have to cash in on MMA odds in 2008. Dana White seems to have saved the best for last, as UFC 92 includes not only a light heavyweight title fight, but also a No. 1 contender bout for the chance to take on heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.
With just one other MMA competitor left to topple—Affliction—White has thrown a great number of his most recognizable stars, specifically those in larger weight classes, onto one megacard to round out the year.
The headliner, Griffin vs Evans betting, pits two completely opposite fighters against one another. The only thing similar about them is that they both emerged from the popular reality show “The Ultimate Fighter”. Beyond that, the two are stylistically different—Griffin is well-versed in several martial arts and is an extremely patient fighter. Evans, on the other hand, is a fighter who likes to force the issue and is a pure striker with a tremendous background in kickboxing.
Both are coming off huge wins—Griffin defeated Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in a five-round decision, while Evans knocked Chuck Liddell out in the second round. Therein lays the difference between the two fighters.
Let’s put it this way—Forrest Griffin is a meat and potatoes fighter. He does everything well, always arrives in great shape and turns in a consistent, gutsy performance night in and night out. His counterpart is a very flashy fighter who is hell-bent on knocking people out at any cost. Evans may have a couple less potatoes, but has bacon wrapped around his steak and is covered with plenty of gravy.
That fight will be preceded by Frank Mir taking on Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for a shot at the heavyweight title. Mir vs Nogueira betting will be one of the most heavily bet UFC 92 lines, but it will also be a treat for martial arts purists. Mir and Nogueira aren’t your typical haymaker-throwing heavyweights. The two former champions both love the ground game and are expert practitioners of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Adding intrigue to the fight is the fact that Mir defeated the current champ when Lesnar made his debut. However, while Lesnar was pushed and given a shot at the title, Mir has been toiling on the mid-card and forced to claw his way back up to the top.
Similarly, Nogueira was given the title of “interim champion,” after Randy Couture left the company. However, Couture was given his title back upon his return, which he promptly lost to Lesnar. Nogueira was never compensated.
Since these fighters are equally matched, the bout will come down to who has the better stand-up game. UFC 92 odds suggest Nogueira holds the slight edge, making him roughly a two-dollar favorite on the Mir vs Nogueira line.
HAMMER’S PICK: While the Griffin vs Evans line favors the champion, if this fight goes the distance as the tale of the tape suggests it will, Evans’ activity in the octagon will push the judges’ scorecards in his favor. Bet on Rashad Evans.
In the other scrap, Nogueira has some beef to settle after “losing” his heavyweight title. Bet on Nogueira.
