Edgar was a wrestler who earned his purple belt in BJJ, and while many think he came out of nowhere to beat Penn, Edgar is 7-1 in the UFC with a knockout, a submission and three “Fight of the Night” victories, so he earned his spot against Penn. He took full advantage of his chance as well, standing up with Penn for most of the fight and outboxing “The Prodigy”. Edgar was also the first person to take Penn to the mat in a lightweight fight, using his wrestling background (Edgar still coaches wrestling at Rutgers) to find an edge, but his ability to stand up with Penn surprised everyone watching the fight.
