After a rain-filled but exciting week of tennis in Toronto, online betting fans will be following the men's tennis circuit to Cincinnati for the ATP West and South Financial, where Rafael Nadal will undoubtedly be the favorite once again.
Roger Federer, the world's current No. 1 seed, has lost the faith of sports bettors. He had a horrific early-round loss to Giles Simon in the Rogers Cup and nearly endured another catastrophic defeat to Robby Ginepri in Cincinnati. Federer won 7-6, 7-6, 6-0 in a match that could have easily been 7-6, 7-6 the other way.
Federer still clings to the world No. 1 ranking but that's just a formality. Nadal has overtaken him as the top player on the Tour and is clearly inside Federer's head. The Swiss had an embarrassing loss to Nadal in the French Open final and then fell to Nadal again in more heartbreaking fashion at the Wimbledon Final. Federer lost to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinals.
For most players, making the semifinals or better in three Grand Slams is phenomenal, but we hold Federer to a higher standard. Not only is he losing in Grand Slams now, he's struggling in regular tour stops.
Djokovic, who called out Federer as being vulnerable at Wimbledon, has looked weak himself. Bettors who have tailed him have been brutally disappointed. Djokovic lost in the second round at Wimbledon before flaking out to Andy Murray in the Rogers Cup.
The ATP in Cincy is Nadal's to lose. His next match-up, with Florenta Serra (+1400), is a cakewalk. Regardless of who Federer and Djokovic play in their next match, sports bettors should tread with caution.
