Perry heavily favored in weakened John Deere field
Golf odds for the John Deere Classic
With virtually all of the top 20 in the World Golf Rankings taking this week off of the PGA Tour to prepare for the British Open next week, Kenny Perry is the odds-on favorite in the sports book to stake his claim to a Ryder Cup spot when the PGA heads to the TPC at Deere Run for the John Deere Classic. Jonathan Byrd is the defending winner in this event, but who should fans who bet sports online be backing?
Perry is a huge favorite at +700 , and a win this week would not only cement his place on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, but it also quiet some experts who are criticizing the 27-year veteran's decision to skip the British Open. Perry feels he would increase his chances of making the Ryder Cup team by playing in the U.S. Bank Championship instead, and you cannot fault his feeling as representing your country is a huge deal. Perry has two wins in his last four starts, and may be playing the best of anyone in the PGA right now. He is a good bet to place this week.
Australia's Aaron Baddeley is next at +2000, and the talented young player has stumbled this season after showing tons of promise last year. Baddeley finished a disappointing 29th in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, and has not posted a top-ten finish since he came in tied for second to Boo Weekeley at the Verizon Heritage back in April. Baddeley would love to have some momentum heading into the British Open, so this is a big weekend for him.
Heath Slocum is rated at +2100, and he is another young player who had a rough start to the 2008 campaign, but he is starting to come around with three top-tens in his last six starts, including a ninth-place at the U.S. Open.
Two more players in U.S. Ryder Cup contention , D.J. Trahan and Woody Austin, are listed at +2600 and +3300 respectively. Austin sits in ninth in the standings (the top ten make it), but a second-place finish at the Buick Open was his first since March. Meanwhile, Trahan was great in June, failing to finish lower than 22nd in three tournaments, including a surprise fourth-place finish at the U.S. Open.
Marco Sussman isn't too bad on the links, reportedly a five handicap. But, he's great in the sports betting game. He'll watch just about anything you put in front of him, but golf is what really gets his juices flowing. Thoughts or questions? Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
