Tour De France Betting - Contador, not Armstrong the favorite for France
Put on your yellow jersey - it’s Tour de France betting season. Surprisingly, Lance Armstrong is not the favorite at this year’s event, even though he’s won it so many times in the past. Instead, the sportsbook odds makers have put Armstrong’s teammate, Alberto Contador, as the favorite, and he’ll try to upset the story of Armstrong’s comeback.
Tour De France Betting: Contador +110 to win Tour De France
- Contador – not Armstrong – the best rider on the team
- Will Lance split off and form an American alliance?
- Armstrong will be rusty
Lance Armstrong is back clearly a bit factor on the Tour De France odds, but some things have changed since he last retired. For starters, he’s not even the best rider on his team any more. Tour De France betting sharps should take note that Alberto Contador, the 26-year-old Spaniard, is the best rider on the team and online betting favorite. Contador has already won three of cycling’s grand tours and is in no way, shape or form going to lay down for Armstrong. The good news is that they are on the same team, so they should be able to get to the front of the pack - but the question is, who will separate at the Pyrenees?
There’s a good shot that Armstrong may not really be a serious factor on the 2009 Tour De France betting, which comes as a surprise to many Americans. Contador is clearly the better rider at his point and Armstrong may get left in the dust fairly early in this race. There is a building tension between Contador and Armstrong, and the debate is whether Armstrong will support Contador through the race and try to help him win, or if he will split off and try to make a new alliance. Armstrong might opt to make an all-American team-up with Levi Leipheimer, which would make for a very interesting dynamic for sportsbooks.
The Tour de France odds favor Contador, though, and cycling betting fans should trust that. Armstrong has been retired for a few years and it’s unreasonable to expect him to come back without rust.
Giuseppe Paccioni’s Pick: Contador +110
Giuseppe Paccioni still does the casual time trial but since he never really rode with the peloton, so now he’s put the brakes on his competitive racing career. The good news is that his wheels are always in motion when it comes to cycling betting. Email Comments@BetOnline.com.
