Tennis odds and Wimbledon took a wacky turn this week when Novak Djokovic was surprisingly eliminated in the second round, giving fans who bet on sports and your online sportsbook a shock.
Surely, plenty of sports bettors had Djokovic to make a deep run into the tournament after the Serbian fired a verbal volley in Roger Federer's direction. Djokovic suggested Federer was vulnerable and that players were close to knocking him off as the world's best tennis player. But Marat Safin got the better of Djokovic, winning 6-4, 7-6(3) and 6-2 in the second round.
Safin makes an interesting pick going forward. Despite being ranked 75th in the world, Safin is a former No. 1 and owns two Grand Slam titles. When he finds his game, he can give just about anyone trouble, as his win over Djokovic is proves.
Before making Safin your newest underdog pick, bear in mind he's not entirely comfortable on a grass surface?Wimbledon is the only major where he hasn't advanced beyond the quarters. However, Safin seems loose and noted there's little pressure on him to advance. Riding the momentum of a big upset win, odds are he can squeeze out another victory.
Perennial favorite Federer advanced against Robin Soderling, winning 6-3, 6-4 and 7-6. Federer has won the last five Wimbledon tournaments and, at this point, his biggest competition appears to be Rafael Nadal, whom have faced one another in the past two finals. If anyone has the juice to knock off the champ, it's Nadal.
There has yet to be a major upset on the women's side. No. 1 Ana Ivanovic did have a dogfight with Nathalie Dechy, though, scraping out a 6-7, 7-6, 10-8 victory. We're betting she'll rebound and play much better in her next match. Keep an eye on underdog Serena Williams, too. Williams, a two-time Wimbledon champion, took care of business against Urszula Radwanska, winning 6-4, 6-4.
