French Open betting handicappers know that Nadal is the king of the clay in France. He’s won 28 straight matches at Roland Garros and last year he won the French Open without even dropping a single set.
But there is hope for a change and there is still hope for Federer to reach his goal of a career Grand Slam. It’s a bleak hope, but there is a level of optimism after his recent victory in Spain.
The French Open betting crowd watched attentively as Nadal and Federer met in the final of the Madrid Open. Federer finally won (6-4, 6-4), which ended Nadal’s 33-match clay court winning streak.
French Open odds still heavily favor Nadal but at least now Federer’s confidence will return somewhat.
Many experts who watched the match conceded that Nadal played a four-hour semifinal with Novak Djokovic just a day earlier, which is a good reason why Nadal wasn’t as sharp as he normally is. Also, the French Open betting crowd knows that just two years ago, Federer also upended Nadal on clay before the French Open, ending his 81-match winning streak in Hamburg.
While that win also boosted his confidence, it didn’t help him for French Open betting; Federer still lost to Nadal in the final.
Federer has lost three consecutive times in the French Open final to Nadal and, while his win in Madrid is an encouraging sign, the reality is that it was just his first title of 2009.
French Open odds are fairly straightforward. Sportsbook odds have Nadal as a -300 to win the tournament while Federer (+600) is the only other player with a realistic shot to beat him on clay. Djokovic and Andy Murray are the only other two players in the tournament who have odds shorter than 20-to-1 but neither are on Nadal’s level on clay.
The French Open betting crowd should expect Nadal to dominate once again. Even though Djokovic gave him a tough time in the Madrid Semi-Finals and Federer upended him for the title in Spain, Nadal will be much sharper at Roland Garros.
