Wimbledon Betting - why Federer is still the slickest on the grass
Online sports betting handicappers know that the main story of the 2009 Wimbledon betting season will be whether or not Roger Federer can regain his crown. After last season’s epic battle between Rafael Nadal and Federer, there were some questions as to whether Nadal had fully taken the control of the tennis world. But after Nadal slipped up on the clay in Paris, the door is again open for Federer to once again reign supreme.
Wimbledon Betting: Federer +275 to win Wimbledon
- Nadal has struggled on clay; will that carry over to the grass?
- Mopy Murray will fall short again
- Federer will rule his home court to another Wimbledon win
In sports, it seems like there is always a good guy versus a bad guy, but at Wimbledon, there will be a number of potential storylines that are all positive. The Wimbledon odds will favor Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal is right there with him. Behind them will be the Wimbledon betting community’s hopeful, Andy Murray, who will be looking to become the first non-Swiss, non-Spanish player to win in a while.
Novak Djokovic will also be in the mix as will Juan Martin Del Potro, who is quickly rising on the Wimbledon odds in the in the sportsbook. But the main story will be Federer and whether or not he can get over his classic loss to Nadal last year. That bout may have been the best tennis match ever and the two will likely be on a collision course once again.
Nadal exited the French Open unexpectedly early, and after losing to Federer on clay in the Madrid Open, there is more than just an opening for Federer to regain control. For a while, it looked like Nadal would be his Achilles heel, but Federer has apparently overcome his mental hurdle. There was a short period of time where Federer was becoming visibly frustrated but the Wimbledon betting handicappers have noticed that he’s regained his poise.
The good news for Federer – and the Wimbledon odds reflect this – is that the lawn in England is his home court. The crowds love him, and aside from the Scottish Andy Murray, Federer will be the fan favorite. Mopy Murray will get the loudest cheers from the fans but the truth is that he’s simply not on the level of Nadal or Federer. Murray has tried to join the elite ranks but has consistently fallen short in the Grand Slam department. He’ll likely do another ‘Tim Henman’ again this season: making a deep run into the tournament, playing in at least one five-set epic against someone he would defeat easily at any other tournament, then get smoked like lox on a bagel by Federer or Nadal, whichever lands on his side of the bracket.
Del Potro and potentially Djokovic could crash the party here, but by all accounts in the Wimbledon odds, it will be another Nadal-Federer final and another classic. This time, pick Federer to be celebrating with the strawberries and cream.
