World Cup Finals – List of World Cup winners

With the finals for World Cup betting coming up, you should go back to the past to help you make your picks for the biggest soccer tournament on the planet in South Africa in June.

World Cup Finals – Appearances

Brazil is the only country in the world to field a team in every single edition of the World Cup with 19 appearances, while Germany and Italy are right behind them with 17. Argentina and Mexico round the top five with 15 and 14 appearances, respectively, but England, France and Spain are also there with 13. In the final game, Brazil and Germany are tied for the most appearances with seven apiece, but they’ve met in the final just once, when Brazil beat Germany 2-0 at Korea/Japan 2006. Italy has appeared in the final six times, most recently at Germany 2006.

World Cup Finals – Runners-Up

The Germans lead the way in second-place finishes with four, most recently in 2006 in Korea/Japan against Brazil. They also finished second in back-to-back World Cups, falling 3-1 to Italy at Spain 1982, and then again at Mexico 1986, when Argentina beat them 3-2 (however, they avenged that win in the next World Cup at Italy 1990). Then there are a slew of teams with two runner-up appearances, such as Argentina (1978, 1986), Brazil (1950, 1998), the Czechs (1934, 1962), Hungary (1938, 1954), Italy (1970, 1994) and the Netherlands (1974, 1978).

World Cup Finals – Wins

Italy pulled to within one win of Brazil with their victory over France in extra time at Germany 2006. The Brazilians have won five World Cups, including two of the last four, and along with Italy, they’ve gone back-to-back in this tournament, beating the Swedes 5-2 in 1958 on their own turf, and then again in 1962 when they rolled Czechoslovakia 3-1 in Chile. Italy’s four wins came in at home in 1934, defeating the Czechs 2-1 in extra time, and they defended their crown in a 4-2 win over Hungary in France in 1938. The Italians didn’t win again until 1982, when they dropped West Germany 3-1, and then of course, there was 2006’s controversial win in penalties over France in a match marred by Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt on Marco Matarazzi. The Germans have won this event three times, but not since 1990 when they edged Argentina 1-0 in Italy.
