World Cup Groups – Group Rundown For The 2010 World Cup

The groups for World Cup betting were drawn on December 4th in Cape Town, South Africa, so now we know who will face who when the ball is kicked off on June 11th. Here’s a look at how the World Cup groups shook out.

World Cup Groups – Group A

The French have been in two of the last three World Cup finals, and they are one of two teams in this group to win the biggest tournament in soccer. Uruguay won the inaugural event in 1930 on their home soil and again in 1950, but has since fallen off. Mexico has dropped out of the second round in the last four World Cups, while South Africa has never made it out of the group stages.

World Cup Groups – Group B

Only Argentina has a World Cup under their belt in this group, winning in 1978 and again in 1986. South Korea came in fourth when they hosted the World Cup in 2002, which was the last time that Nigeria qualified for this event, although they had two straight trips to the round of 16 prior to that. Greece hasn’t qualified for the World Cup since 1994 in the United States, but they have one of the biggest upsets in recent memory on their resume as they won Euro 2004 as the hosts.

World Cup Groups – Group C

England hasn’t won the World Cup since they hosted it in 1966, but that’s still one more than the rest of the group combined. The best finish for team USA was a third-place result in the first World Cup back in 1930, but they’ve improved by leaps and bounds, even since they hosted the event in 1994. Algeria hasn’t qualified for the event since 1986, while Slovenia is still looking for their first World Cup victory, having dropped all three of their games in their only appearance in 2002.

World Cup Groups – Group D

The Germans have World Cup final appearances to spare for the rest of their World Cup group as they have been in the final seven times, winning three of them. The Aussies were a surprise in 2006, going to the second round for their best result, while Serbia lost all three of their group matches in the same tournament in Germany. Ghana also reached the second round for the first time in their history in 2006.

World Cup Groups – Group E

No team in this group has even won the World Cup, although the Dutch did go to back-to-back finals in 1974 and 1978. Denmark followed up a second-round appearance in 2002 by missing the 2006 tournament in Germany, while Japan fell out in the group stages. Cameroon has advanced out of the World Cup groups just once in their five attempts, and they also missed the 2006 event.

World Cup Groups – Group F

The defending champions from Italy has four World Cup wins in six finals appearances, and all told, they’ve been in the World Cup 17 times, which is tied for second with Germany. Paraguay has never gotten past the second round, and they fell out of the group stages in 2006. New Zealand is making just their second appearance in the World Cup, and they were winless back in 1982. Slovakia is making their World Cup debut as an independent country after Czechoslovakia split up in 1992.

World Cup Groups – Group G

The Brazilians are the only country to appear in all 19 World Cups, and they also lead the way with five wins. North Korea is making their first appearance in the World Cup since 1966, when they went to the quarterfinals, while the Ivory Coast is hoping to build on their group-stage exit in their World Cup debut in 2006. Portugal came in fourth in 2006, but their best result is a third-place result in 1966.

World Cup Groups – Group H

This is the second group that doesn’t have a World Cup winner among them, although Spain has made 13 appearances with a best result of fourth in 1950. Another second-round exit like the one in 2006 won’t be tolerated by Spanish fans. The Swiss also made it to the second round in 2006, but their best finish is the quarterfinals in 1954. Honduras didn’t win a game in their lone appearance in 1982, while Chile is back on the big stage for the first time since 1998. Their best result is a third-place finish in 1962, when they hosted the event.
